It's because they were "self appointed" or some of their leaders decided this at some point. The reason they seem to be so bigoted in the Old Testament is because their leaders were. The only people who were granted atonement for sins were the Jews until Jesus came along and the gentiles got involved in the "New Religion" and the "Shedding of Blood" was always required just as in many other myths cross culturally. If you read the Old Testament you will see how the Bible considers many other races to be "less than human" and even permits their slavery. In Deuteronomy and Joshua you can see where "God" commanded that they commit genocide on a massive scale. I have no hatred for the Jews but I do understand why the early Christians did.

You're kidding right? Try doing a little exploration on the history of the Jews and you might find that being "God's Chosen People" isn't all it's cracked up to be. God didn't promise the Jews or the Christian's an easy life, just and eternal one. The only thing you can possible do to "earn" it is the trust and believe.

There was an interesting tidbit about this in a book I read. The book was called "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Understanding Judaism." The author of the book writes that, "Jews weren't so much the chosen people as the choosing people. They were the first people in their time to choose the one, true God over the various pagan deities of the area. In doing so, God saw them as suitable candidates to be the people to deliver his message to the world."
Being Jewish comes with many more responsibilities than Gentiles. Jews are bound to follow the 613 commandments in the Torah. Gentiles are only obligated to follow the Seven Noahide Laws. Either way would get you to Heaven.

Hello, JZA:
After the flood, Noah's descendants scattered to different areas of the Middle East, and they took God's religion with them.
You may recall that Baalam was a prophet from Persia--see the donkey's photo to the left--he's writing this. Also the wise men came from that area at the time of Christ's birth.
Then, there was Jethro at the time of Exedus, he was a priest of the Most High.
And Melchizedek at the time of Abraham--he accepted tithes.
So, you see God's relilgion was widespread. He told Abram he would give him Palestine in 400 years because their sins were not bad enough then. Genesis 26:4-5 records: "And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws."
Let this be a lesson to you, keeping God's commandments in His strength gives him right to bless you, too.
Yes, God's promises are still for those who obey Him, and you are adopted into the New Covenant as "spiritual Jews."
This is under the plan of salvation, JZA, and god would not that anyone perish. He makes one more attempt to reveal his plan of salvation and identify Antichrist. Break a last-day Bible code at www.revelado.org/revealed.htm

We are all God's children and we are all special. God could apear to anyone, but he chooses those who are the most prosecuted. Throughout history, Jews have been the most persecuted people/religion. That is why God appeared to them, shaping the stories in the bible. That is why they are called the "Chosen People". It doesn't mean they are any more special or that God loves us any less.
When people worship God, no matter what their religion, they are praying to the same God. He has no name. When Muslims, Jews or Christians or someone from any other religion, pray to Him, he listens. Faith means believing in something that is not firmly supported by evidence. If people understood this, there'd be more religious tolerance, and zero holy wars.

The Jews are chosen because they are under the Old Covenant with God. Christians are God's chosen because through their Baptism they enter into the New Covenant established by Christ through His sacrifice so that all men may be saved.
It is important to note that God is forever faithful in His Covenants with man even if man is not faithful to God. God does not remove His Covenants for those who are obedient.
In Christ

Why do you need to be? God has given each of us (our people and us individually) gifts and purpose. Why envy that of another?
I'm not a Jew either, but have tremendous respect for their heritage and what God has done through them. They were chosen because of the faithfulness of their ancestors. The chosen people means that God chose them to BLESS the world through them. Not to bless them only.

They did nothing that made them special, and that is why God chose them. They can not say God chose us because ... we are better in this or that way.
No, God chose them because there was nothing special about them. God wanted them to be an example to the rest of the world of how to live for God. On the most part, they have not done that, but God still loves them and wants to save them. It is the same leason that we need to learn.
