Maybe we need a jingle so that kids can learn how it's spelled.

I think the more appropriate question is "Why is it so difficult for many people to spell ANYTHING AT ALL?"

I read the questions posted here, and it seems like english is a 3rd language for most. It's difficult to understand what they are even trying to ask.

Because those how don't care to learn the word have no right to use it. Most people that spell atheist wrong don't have a clue what it is.

I seriously doubt they'd like us spelling "christain", which I would never do, of course. But really, my guess is that most of them spelling "athiest" are in the 12-14 year old age group and have no idea what they are saying anyway.

i before e except after c. The rule doesn't apply to atheism does it. Just like many other rules. Ironic?
I don't know about other languages but in the Spanish language the sound "eeee" actually is the vowel i.
Something to think about. SO phonetically i first would be correct.

I have conceded that "athiest" is an actual word, a derogatory term for atheist used by christians. It'll be in the dictionary soon enough.

I propose as well the term "christain" (a stain on Christ) as a derogatory for fundamentalists used by atheists.

I'm a Christian and I always spell Atheist in the correct way. Maybe is because you'll never had an important impact in peoples' lifes.

Maybe it is a spiteful response to the misspelling of christian....as in xian or xtian, but I feel it is just poor spelling.

Probably for the same reason there are so many people that can't spell Christian or God or Raspberry.
