He gets a persistant cough usually in the spring. I have taken him to the vet before and she gives him antibiotics and decongestant...unfortunately right now I have no money to pay for a vet visit. I was curious if I use a childs decongestant if that might help him. He is still eating and drinking fine he is just coughing sometimes.

Do not give human medications to you pet unless you have been prescribed by a vet to do so. To self medicate and self diagnose could do more harm than good.

Call your vet, explain your circumstances and have the doctor tell you what over the counter medications if any you can give your cat, and he will tell you the correct dosages.

No! Many human medications are toxic to cats. Even some meds that are ok to give to dogs can kill a cat. You have to be very careful with cats. See if your vet will allow you to make payments, or find one who will.

I have a book which says what meds are safe for cats and dogs. Here are a couple of alternatives.

Benadryl **** 10 mg for a 10 pound or larger cat every 8 hrs
Chlortrimeton **** 2 mg per cat every 12 hours

I suppose if you could find the same med in liquid form, without any other active ingredients, you could try it. Call your vet to make sure, and explain that you cannot afford the meds right now. If he is a commpassionate vet, he will work something out with you. Good luck

Cat Cough Medicine

No, NO NO!!! Do not give your cat a human medicine! You could easily kill your cat! Call your vet to see if you can bring your cat in now, and pay in a few weeks. If you have a good repore with your vet, this shouldn't be a problem.
Any Vet who is in it for the welfare of the animals will tell you to pay as you can (ie. installments). When the Vets care more about the animals than the money, they will always work with you!
Good luck to you and your cat!

No - definitely not. Cats are very sensitive and their livers cannot metabolize many human medications. Unfortunately, your cat needs a trip to the vet. You might be able to call the vet and tell them its the same seasonal allergies the cat's had in the past and they may prescribe the medication without having to pay for the office visit.

don't know some medicines are toxic to cats that aren't toxic to humans. just like i had an older cat with a tooth problem wasn't chewing well, had to take to different vets (none of which checked his tooth, and wanted to do all blood tests), i told them he wasn't sick just would chew food funny then stop (probably because of pain) and wouldn't drink (unlike dogs, cats don't drink with tooth problem), couldn't give pain killers (i knew aspirin was toxic, but vet said can't give ibuprofen or tylenol either), vet gave a strong antibiotic for gum and oral infections, and that's when said don't give any other pain reliever, cause he gave him some barbiturate or narcotic painkiller, but would make cat tired and more lethargic and still wouldn't eat

you ever see that Seinfeld episode where Kramer took his dog to the vet because he (Kramer) had a cough and Kramer didn't want to go to regular medical doctors, doctor said probably got 'cause drinking out of toilet lol, he said the dog's medicine was making him bark and become a dog. like dogs can take aspirin, but toxic to cats

i'd be careful giving him any human OTC cough syrup, might have analgesics in it toxic like aspirin or ibuprofen or acetaminophen, don't know if DM (dextromethorphan) cough suppressant is toxic, does anybody know if they have a Veterinary Desk Reference for animal drugs, like the PDR (Physicians' Desk Reference) for humans?

Please direct this question to your VET. Ring them, that won't cost anything!

NEVER take the advice from people on Yahoo Answers, especially when it comes to drugs! What if you decide to accept the answer 'yes it's fine' and it ends up hurting the cat? There are plenty of people on here who would give wrong advice on here on purpose, for the sick fun of it!

For the record many human cough preparations contain paracetemol, which is very harmful to cats.

unless directed to by a vet I wouldn't give your cat anything. call them up and see what they tell you you can give your cat. especially if you are an established client, a lot of vets will let your pay in installments till you get it paid off.

I wouldn't chance giving him the wrong medicine or the wrong dose...call the vet and they should be able to tell you over the phone if this is an option for you. Hope this helps.

I advise you not to because animals do not have the same reaction as humans and some animals can die from that kinda like animal testing it can kill the animals or if you give a cat or dog chocolate they can die so i don't recommend it....
