Opiates, as the name suggests, are derivatives from the Opium tree, flower and fruit (poppeye). Opiates can also be made synthetically in laboratories.

These are substances that have strong narcotic properties and are usually used in pain killers, epidurals and sedatives. Consumed orally or through an injection, they alleviate pain and induce a false sense of well being- which is vital in treating trauma cases.

The use of medicines containing such opiates can usually become a habit. Hence, their sale across the counter is banned in the civilized world.

There are about 40 alkaloids of opium :
ALKALOIDS (about 40)
1)Morphine2)Papaverine
3)Codeine4)Noscapine (narcotine)
5)Thebaine 6)etc.e.g. It is used in manufacturing of Heroin also.

Opium does not grow on trees as some one has written, it is derived from UNRIPE Fruit of poppy SHRUB.
