Oh you are a rascal. Great question! There are a lot of things I don't understand (understatement here). But I don't really fear them because my consciousness is limited and I willing to accept that fact. My life revolves around what I perceive to be fact. I trust what I believe (to a limited extent, this saying it is subject to change) based upon the data available. It's not wise (I think) to fear what you simply do not understand.
As you are (I know) a fan of physics as am I, neither of us fully understand the many theories that are proposed from one day to the next. But, we have a avid interest in these things. The data isn't all in so "understanding" completely is not currently in the picture. But are we afraid of physics? Certainly not !! (By the way, have you read a new book out called The Tenth Dimension, I read a review on it yesterday and it sounds terrific)
Anyway, not trusting is not necessarily fear of the unknown. I would consider it more like being wary of something. Unless of coarse one has a paranoid personality then it may be fear.
Now in context with this forum I'd like to add this. What is proof for one person may only be rubbish to another. It's all in what you perceive.
I simply love the way you're mind works. (Troll gives Cat a big gold star)

Trust or defy the world you live in, it was created by our ancestors for us to enjoy and discover. Some people will live never questioning their existence or purpose. I am not like them. Fear keeps us alive. Fear can kill us. One day the world will suffer for all its sin. This world is going to hell, and I'm taking it there.

Although mistrust and fear are two completely different concepts, one is often the result of the other. Fear spawns mistrust, so if you do not trust what you don't understand, the reason may very well be because you are afraid of the unknown.

Yes. We do not trust because we fear - and fear is always fear of the unknown. Fear is of some unknown future - not the now.
If you accept the unknown and are comfortable with not knowing...then fear is fairly non-existant. And you can trust (or have faith).

Proverbs 3:5 and 6
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart;
and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge Him
and He shall direct thy paths.
Proverbs 3:7-13
Be not wise in thine own eyes;fear the Lord, and depart from evil.
It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.
honor the Lord with thy substance, and with the first fruits of all thine increase;
So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.
My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord;
neith be weary of His correction.
For whom the Lord loves He corrects;
even as a Father the Son in whom He delights.
Happy is the man that finds wisdom,
and the man that gets understanding.

No.
Why should I fear something I dont know.
I fear what I do know :)
I fear what I know can hurt me.
You need to understand that there are logical and illogical basis for emotions.
The wise have logical basis.

Don't we have an obligation to attempt to understand things we don't trust? It is easy to be afraid of what we don't understand and knowledge typically is the cure for our fear.

Trust and fear are two different things. I fear nothing, but I hardly trust anyone.
Edit: Yes I trust you kitty! :-D

I trust plenty of things that I don't understand, like gravity, rocket science, brain surgery....because I know that it's real.
