at 40"+ you're on the verge of whether lcd is better than plasma.

you'll be spending a lot of money, and so i wouldn't rely on a bunch of amateurs on yahoo giving you their well intentioned opinions. (like me and the majority of posters, but not all)

there are many articles on the web for lcd vs plasma, which is best, and which suits your requirements.

best option would be to go to your local electrical retailer and try to view different screens in action, preferrably side by side showing the same thing.

be aware that some screens really struggle with fast moving images, such as sports like football/soccer, and action movies ... you end with blurry pixelated and distorted images that are hard to follow.

the one notable problem with plasmas used to be their tendency for 'burn in' if they're left showing the same image for too long ... for example if watching a sports game and the channel has graphics with their logo and the score in the top left corner, once the game's over this image may be 'burned in' to the screen - which may or may not be permanent.

research research research is the key, use yahoo search or google for the lcd vs plasma debate and above see some tvs in person.

i don't know if you're from the uk or not, but if you're spending any kind of money on such a tv you definitely want HD ready to future proof yourself, and may want to ensure it's also got a digital receiver inside (for UK freeview). other than that, usual things for tv, scart & hd sockets, etc.

lcd is better than plasma because plasma tvs use way more energy, don't last too long. Also if you like to play video games or watch movies on a dcd player or vcr plasma tvs can cause burn-ins so that the image will always appear in the background. LCD tvs don't have burn-ins. They are equal in quality but plasma tvs have way more cons.

Read what the experts have to say -

Get copies of What Hi-Fi Sound and Vision, What Home Cinema, HD-TV Review, Home Cinema Choice, etc.

They are written by people who know what are REALLY the best televisions out there. You'll be thankful that you checked 'em out, believe me...

get plasma much better pic quality. Stick w/ either in order pioneer, panasonic, samsung. Make sure its HD and not EDTV. needs to be atleast 1024x780 resoulution. The pioneer is by far superior, but they are almost twice as much as samsung and panasonic.
