My cocker ***** just had 5 puppies a week ago. My spayed cat lol just had a kitten last night ( I adopted her from an animal shelter) Well the mama cat isn't doing anything with the kitten. Since I have a lactating dog already would it hurt or help the little kitten to stay with her!

There have been many cases of cross species nurturing amongst a wide variety of mammels with no ill effects...especially with dogs and cats (being human pets, they are of course much easier to study).

As long as Mama Dog doesn't mind, do it!!

You probably need to speak to your vet about this, and they can tell you what you can do.

I would also call the shelter that you got your cat from and let them know that some how a cat that they supposedly had spayed has now had a kitten. I know that sometimes an owner will lie when they surrender an animal to a shelter and tell them that the animal is fixed so that could be how this happened. You need to get your girl fixed ASAP and I would make sure that the shelter pays for it.

I don't think it will hurt the kitty at all... just make sure that the dog doesn't hurt the kitten in any way. Oh and the Cat probably isn't doing anything because it wasn't the one to have the kitten, and because she has no milk in her since she was spayed.

the dog can feed the kitten... however... it wont give the kitten the nutrition it needs.

cats and dogs are different species, and both have different dietry requirements. Both have different milk.

if the mother cat isnt feeding its kitten, you need to take the kitten to a VET who can give you some cat formula and tell you how to feed and look after it. It will die or be very malnutritioned if you just let it feed from the dog with no other supplements.

If your cocker will accept the kitten its possible she may very well allow it to nurse... a good way to get her to accept it would be to rub her puppies with a washcloth or towel and then rub the kitten with the same one transferring her puppies smell to the kitten. then put the kitten under her nose and wait to see what happens. ( if she seems to accept its presence you can just lay her among the puppies.

I had a cat that " stole" my female dogs puppies after her litter died so I know for fact the reverse is true.

It's not ideal. Dog milk and cat milk are different as the two species have different nutrient requirements. Also I think cocker spaniel teats will be much too big for a neonate kitten!

Much better to get some proper KITTEN milk replacement - this is formulated to mimic cat milk as close as possible. It's the same as not trying to bring up newborn human babies on cows milk - they need either human milk or formula when they're that young.

It's been done before and as mentioned previously cat and dog milk is different but it's better than the alternative. you will probably have to keep the kitten with the pups so that it smells like the rest of the litter.
Good luck with this one

you can try. it happens often that different breeds would nurse other breeds. Cats have been known to nurse puppies. Lay the dog down and show the kitten her teat- monitor them and see how the momma dog reacts. She should take to it quite easily, but you need to keep an eye out for a couple of days to make sure she doesnt reject it.

i'm not sure if dog milk would be good for a kitten. kittens should drink their mothers milk but since the mum isnt doing anything, the kitten should start drinking herself.

Rather supplement, get advice from a qualified vet on what the best supplement is.
