Well your dog should have started vaccines at 6- 8 weeks of age. If that has happened wait until he is 12 weeks and he can get his Rabies vaccine and Distemper combo. Dogs usually get distemper combos 3-4 times 3-4 weeks apart. Leptospirosis is an important vaccine as well. Your vet may not want to give all of these vaccines at the same time.

Your puppy should have a series of vaccinations starting at 8 weeks of age, they are usually given at three week intervals until he is about 15-18 weeks old.

He will need distemper and parvo virus vaccinations as well as a rabies vaccination that is good for 6 months. He will be given another rabies at 1 year which will be good for 3 years.

Once the distemper and parvovirus protocols are done, he will need to get boosters every year.

The puppy should also be checked for parasites. This is done by bringing in a stool sample in for testing. If he has parasites, he will be given medication to get rid of them.

He will be ok to be neutered at 6 months of age. He will need a heartworm blood check when he is over 7 months old and if that is negative he can then be put on preventative. A heartworm check should then be done yearly.

Being on flea and tick medication is a good idea also.

When you take him back to the vet, they should have booklets for you about new puppies that you can get to read up on all the information.

Of course you want to make sure - even if he is healthy, you want to make him safe from diseases in the future!

Basic vaccinations cover parvovirus, leptospirosis, distemper, canine parainfluenza, kennel cough, and rabies depending on where you come from.

Puppy vaccinations are supposed to start at 8 weeks old, as this is when they are no longer covered from maternaly derived immunity (from their mothers) so ring your vet to get this arranged now.

Healthy or not- you puppy has to have its shots.. You need to make an appt with your vet, tell them his age and they will give him the appropriate shots that he will need. And also schedule you for other upcoming shots.

Ask your vet; he/she is the only one who really know the answer - and he/she is the only one who will give him his shots safely.
