Color won't lift color, if you are doing this at home, you would have to use a highlighting cap, bleach the hair (not to a blonde level, but enough to lift the soft black shade) and then apply the color you would like your highlights to be. The color of the highlights would depend on your coloring and how often you want to have to redo your highlights. I would venture to say that going with highlights the same color as your natural color would probably look very good, and also allow you to stretch out your highlight maintenance.

I would wait about 3 to 4 weeks to make sure that i DO want highlights. highlights could bleed with the hair or turn a different color if you just got it done. But if you had to get highlights get red/orange

I don't know what type of color you used... permanent, semi-permanent? But you will need to bleach the areas you want highlighted, now that the hair is dyed. Hair color alone will not lighten the dye you have already used to color your hair a soft black.
You could add the highlights right away... but I would recommend that a colorist do it because you could end up giving yourself "drab green" streaks of color if you don't use strong enough products.

Highlights?
Unless you want orange streaks in your hair, Or are planning to go over the bleached out sections with yet ANOTHER color to tone out the warmness (the yellow-orange color that it WILL turn),
then I would strongly recommend against it.

depends what look you are going for
i have soft black hair and have highlighs
i wanted the natural look so i got dark browns and medium browns
but if you looking for more of a funky look try reds and bright colours
i once put electic blonde hair extensions in with the black and i must say it looked really good
experiment
but you will have to get these done at a hairdressers
i did it at home and went ginger!!!
