My cat was hit by a car a few days ago and while she didn't break any bones, she tore a ligament (or maybe it's a tendon) in her knee that's causing her a lot of pain. We have the option of putting a splint on it for 6wks or having surgery to repair it. Just wondering if anyone has an experience either way with what our best option would be. They say she might blow out her knee later in life and that she'll have bad arthritis if we don't get the surgery... but it is very expensive. Thanks.

The cat is about four years old and very healthy and active otherwise.

Hmmmm, tough one. I'm a veterinary nurse, I've seen both options for cats. If it happened to mine I'd get the surgery, because cats don't very much appreciate having a limb in a cast, and 6 weeks is a long time. It can work though.

Then of course there's the risk associated with any surgery, you might want to take that into consideration - discuss with your vet how stable your cat is, if pre-op bloods have been taken, if she needs a drip or anything. Also check with them how often they do this kind of surgery!

I'm sure the vet could answer this question.
