I assumed they might be dumber because they have smaller "brains." I have a small dog that seems really dumb while all the big dogs I know seem obediant and stuff.

Smaller dogs tend to be more independent and less herd based, thus they can be much more difficult to train.

As for brain size, look at brain size in relation to the body for a slightly more accurate indication of intelligence. Even that doesnt hold up fully though,

I'm not going to cap on you like some have- I've had a couple of big dogs, a bouvier, a golden retriever and a samoyed over the years. Now a Pomeranian. The Pom is probably the smartest one I've ever had, and the best with kids. The smaller ones seem to be better watchdogs. The samoyed was the dumbest one, the golden always just had that stupid smile, did tricks and wanted to lick everyone. I think a lot of their attitudes and intelligence depends on their breed, not necessarily the size. ie.Poms are bred from samoyeds and eskimos, I'm not saying they are smarter or better, just that they come from larger breeds that are supposed to be intelligent, and my experience was that the larger ones I experienced were dumb. ***Wilbur there are two common sizes of yorkies, some pet sizes are bigger than show, and are commonly referred to as "Teacup." My Pom is a "Victorian Pom" a larger version of the breed standard. Use your computer a little more, and look things up.***

You know I thought I was the only one who thought that. I have aways owned bigger dogs & my mother in law & several friends have always had small dogs. Their dogs are usually very nervous, uncontrollable, they do not grow to learn what is being said as larger dogs do, will not mind or follow simple commands. I always assumed it was since they had smaller brains, like the big doberman, I remember reading once that they originated from a Rott (color markings) & something else(small brain can't remember!)& I always thought that they were so nervous & high strung because they had a large brain SQUEEZED in a small head & it is pinched. They do tend to "go off" (the one time in my life I was almost ate by a dog was a Dobie Mom)
I have always owned bigger dogs, German Shepard, GS/Nufinland mix, now a Mastiff & by 6-7 months they actually understand what we say & mind & do tricks & are soooo easy to potty train....
I once had a pug & she would stand on her front legs only & pee on my couch even tho she just went outside, my friend had a beagle & it was the stupidiest dog I have known yet, knew no disipline at all, ran wild, no bodily control even full grown, tore everything in the house up.....

No they are not dumber. I had a lab/chow mix that was as dumb as a half a brick. Now I have a pug who is the smartest dog I have ever owned. She will do all sorts of tricks and learns them after just a few times. It depends on breed and treatment. It would help to know the breed not size of your dog. As some breeds are harder to train.

Its all in the way you train and raise the dog. I have three dogs two of them i didn't get till they were older, and the other one I got at 3 months. The two bigger ones Stetson 9 years (german Sheppard) and schultzie 3 years (Italian Mix) both don't listen that well. But my Jack Russell (abbey) is also 3 years and is so smart, she listens and knows so much for being so little. I prefer the smaller dogs now than the bigger ones they seem to listen better from the ones I have seen.

The blood hound is the only dog allowed to give evidence in a court of law in the USA. It's quite medium sized. A lot of dogs who can perforn tricks for an audience are little dogs. St. Bernards are able to save lives. I think dogs of all sizes can be quite intelligent.

I used to have and my friend now has a Labrador retriever. Most of them are totally dumb, but smart at the same time. They can be obedient, but they are like total dummies lol. My aunt has a teacup yorkie and he is pretty smart.

I don't believe they are dumber. Since they are small they do things in different ways.
