The bible and/or god doesn't stop bad things from happening. I surely don't see any child molesters being struck by lightening. I don't see rapists being smitten by the hands of god. I guess since god isn't going to hand out punishment until judgment day (if you believe that rot), we'd better corral these lunatics and keep them away from the law abiding types.
For me, I'll stick with the laws of the land. Now if only the punishments were better suited to the crimes, I'd be happy.

We DO need the courts, police, etc.
God will judge everyone on Judgement Day, for the sins he/she committed. The statement "he wouldn't let anything bad happen to the true believers" - this is false. God gave humans free will. The people that do bad things chose the wrong way and it does affect God's people. Being a Christian does not mean we will not face trouble and heartache, but we have FAITH that God is in control and everything happens according to his perfect plan for us.

Societies are made of people who have agreed to live together in communities, based on a common set of rules. It is in the society's best interests to "police" their own members, in case the actions of one or more persons threatens the common good. Some individuals don't have a sense of the common good, and no respect for the rule of law. For common safety, therefore, we have a system of justice to remove threats to society, and to discipline unruly members.
This is in accordance with God's revealed will: people should enact justice, and not live in anarchy. Rules and laws exist as guidlines for behaviour.
Your condition, btw, is flawed. "IF we truly believed in god and his word, THEN we would have faith that he wouldn't let anything bad happen to the true believers....." No such revelation or commandment exists in the Scriptures (i'm assuming you're talking about the God of the Bible). In order to make such a statement (or assumption) you would have to have prior revelation to back it up, and it doesn't exist! While some people in history HAVE enjoyed safety and prosperity while being faithful to God, many have suffered horribly for their faithfulness. Read the Book of Job for an example. Consider also Jesus Christ, inargueably the most righteous man on the face of the Earth. He was good and faithful to the max, and yet suffered terrible injustices in his life.
Anarchy is not an extension of faith.

Because when you sit and let a bad deed take place without trying to stop it, youre no different than the person doing it.
Also, justice in the hereafter, will be much worse than any kind of punishment youre gonna receive here.
If you have laws that prevent men and women from hurting each other on earth, then you prevent them from ultimately getting punished by God.
So its the merciful thing to do.

God knows that without some kind of rule there would be chaos, anarchy. Thus he inspired Romans 13:1-4 to be written:
"Let every soul be in subjection to the superior authorities, for there is no authority except by God; the existing authorities stand placed in their relative positions by God. Therefore he who opposes the authority has taken a stand against the arrangement of God; those who have taken a stand against it will receive judgment to themselves. For those ruling are an object of fear, not to the good deed, but to the bad. Do you, then, want to have no fear of the authority? Keep doing good, and you will have praise from it; for it is God’s minister to you for your good. But if you are doing what is bad, be in fear: for it is not without purpose that it bears the sword; for it is God’s minister, an avenger to express wrath upon the one practicing what is bad."

That would be anarchy. God is never against human law, in fact it is required; unless it goes against His Word, which is the final Authority. He has appointed judges throughout time.
Ezra 7:25 And thou, Ezra, after the wisdom of thy God, that is in thine hand, set magistrates and judges, which may judge all the people that are beyond the river, all such as know the laws of thy God; and teach ye them that know them not.

God has given us the power of free will and he is going to judge our entire lives and any sins that we have committed to see if we go to paradise or to hell. It is our duty to protect society from criminals and discipline them to make the world a better place to live for all of us.

There is one thing you should know dear, courts of law are not interested in sins but in crime.
For sins, we can take care of it ourselves. I have to go now, I am joining my neighbor who is stoning one of his children.
Peace & love.
