In some instances we're being taxed for more carbon emissions but at the same time those who emit less are being financially rewarded. LPG for example is half the price of unleaded, cars that emit lower emissions have had tax rates cut, businesses are given incentives to cut emissions, grants are available for insulation, there are financial contributions towards energy efficieny appliances etc.
Those producing the most emissions can expect to pay about £1,000 / $2,000 a year more, those producing the least can expect to save about £2,000 / $4,000 a year. These figures are from my own research, I don't particularly trust government figures so I did my own research and detailed calculations.

I agree with Rob it is a stealth tax. The Stern report is a joke (Stern is basically an Accountant!)
The Iraq and soon to come Iran war will have to be paid for and this is how it will be done. Look at history. I should imagine that bombs and such like cause quite a lot of CO2 emissions and certainly ruin the environment. Heyho!

It's a con to get more money out of us based on a complete lie fuelled by bad science.
What they don't tell you is that Carbon Dioxide increases in the atmosphere AFTER temperatures rise - C02 does not cause global warming. That means human carbon emissions are not causing global warming.
The Sun is causing global warming as it is going through a phase of greater activity. The governments of many nations supress these facts and spread scare stories about flooding, extinctions, death and destruction so that they can tax the hell out of us and keep third world countries where they want them.
Remember that in the 1970's they said we were going into a new ice age.

We in the U.S. are not being taxed for carbon emissions, probably because we have not ratified the Kyoto Protocol. But I suppose people in Annex-I countries (like the UK) that have ratified the Kyoto Protocol are taxed, because they will certainly not be able to meet their emission reduction targets and so will have to buy carbon credits. Also, Annex-II countries (the UK is also an Annex-II country) will have to pay big money to developing countries. Either that or they will have to pull out of the Kyoto Protocol.

Because it is easier to get money out of the people who elected them to office than the big corporations that do more poluting.
Example: One of the Plants in Pasadena, Texas puts more polution in the atmosphere than one million cars do per day. But because they are providing jobs for the masses they get the tax breaks and have all the lobbist to avoid paying for their crimes against nature and humanity. Why? Because BIG MONEY always get their way and they get richer while we the tax payer do not.
They fail to clean up their acts and try to justify it by cost factors and therefore the government "IF" the poluters were made to pay out some of the billions of dollars in profits they make each year, the government would allow them to pass the cost of updating and making things cleaner to us while we are still supporting them by buying their products in the first place.
A lot like our utility companies already do with the building of new plants because they failed to make the proper size plants to begin with.
OR for that matter our school districts. They raise the school taxes to build what they say they are going to need for years down the road then after construction is complete they say they mis calculated and therefore need to raise taxes again to build yet another school or to enlarge the one they just built.
This kind of thing happens all the time and we, the tax payers pay for it all.
The governement will always take take take because there are not enough people to make them stop because of our political affiliations and our failure to just vote everyone in office out and start fresh.

the world is warming up anyway without our help. i strongly disagree with this tax because our little country is making no difference anyway. although i do use it as an excuse for telling the kids and the wife to turn lights and tellies off etc.
our government is using it as propaganda
