We wonder looking at the various creatures of the world. Bereft of basic intellect, they live in groups, practices co-operation. See the bee-hive. How many bees toil to collect the honey and save in one common bee-hive. See the ants. How they labour all the day for the common cause of entire colony. We have to learn lessons from these tiny creatures to live a life of amity and co-operation. It is really a sorry state that man descends to beastial levels and catch the throat of others for his own greed, for his survival. What use the intelligence bequethed to him by the Almighty?

Humanity has a distiction from all else in God's creation, if we accept basic tenents found in all religion; we are self-aware, we have a relationship with our Creator (however we see that unknowable essence), and we are charged with learning more about our Creator and loving that Entity. As a race we seem to be growing as a whole, like the individual moving from conception through birth to childhood, through adolecence into adulthood, etc.

When we only view our selves through a historical perspective, we see earlier stages of our communal growth toward our Creator, stages of development in which we depended on force (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual) to acheive higher levels of collective unity. We are now faced with the final stage of collective organization- world unity. The tools of the past are now counter-productive toward achieving this final stage of social growth. The use of war no longer serves our common good, it has become of tool of national self-interest, or when used by small groups it is called terrorism. The tools are the same though, it is self interest by conflicting power groups that attempt to impose definitions that seperate an act of war from an act of terrorism. The end result is the same, death of innocents, destruction, blaming, division- chaos.

We are inexperienced at the use of the new tools of world unity, the history is much shorter, so those committed to national self-interest cite the longer history of earlier stages of growth to justify the continued use of oppression to achieve unity. Among the new tools are consultation among the nations, the application of spiritual principles to practical problems, the viewing of all of humanity as equal to one another, of equal value, of equal rights, of equal responsibilities. The League of Nations, the United Nations, even lesser groupings such as NATO, the Soviet Union, the African Union, the European Union, G-8 describe a movement beyond national interest toward collective good. These all lack sufficient vision (global well-being) to bring us to the final stage of social growth, world unity, and decend back into division and conflct.

We are struggling as a race to acheive this long-sought goal of peace and global prosperity. We are not hopelessly condemned to a cycle of war, greed and chaos. As stated by Shoghi Effendi, the Gaurdian of the Baha'i religion from 1921 to 1957: "The Baha'i religion recognises the unity of God and of His Prophets, upholds the principle of an unfrettered seach after truth, condemns all forms of superstition and prejudice, teaches that the fundamental purpose of religion is to promote concord and harmony, that it must go hand in hand with science, and that it (religion) constitutes the sole and ultimate basis for a peaceful, an ordered and progressive society. It (the Baha'i religion) inculcates the principle of equal opportunity, rights and priviledges for both sexes, advocates compulsory education, abolishes extremes fo poverty and wealth, recommends the adoption of an auxilary international language, and provides the necessary agencies for the establishment and safeguarding of a permanent and universal peace."

Like the human race, we see in religion the evolution of God's teachings toward unity and peace. May we each strive for the setiments so beautifully expressed by the questions and thoughts cited by this friend of humanity.

dogs, hippopotamus and many other animals do not live in amity. Man is like a social animal; he lives in a group, a family, a society or a community but he does not follow the ethics that are required to live in true amity. On the outside he is very social and pretends to be very responsible. Inside he is always on lookout of hurting the others and fulfilling his own selfish motives.

As you have already seen from the many answers, nature is not all kindness and sweetness. However, having said that, I will say that man is the ONLY animal that will kill for no other reason than to enjoy killing. All other animals kill only for their own survival, or survival of their offspring, survival of their genes (as when a lion takes over a pride, he may kill all the cubs in order to bring the females back in season so that he may then pass on his genes).

Some animals do, but many animals are quite thee opposite.

Gangs are like pack animals.
They even mark territory, by tagging their graffiti.

I think the more ppl get away from the primative, the better.

You are dreaming. Many animals exhibit absolutely disgusting behavior. Check out what became of those baby mice, Darling!

Mankind has often used animals to represent certain virtues: lions for courage, bees for industriousness, etc. But to idealize animal behavior, especially in contrast to human behavior, is nonsense. Ask any knowledgeable zoologist.

You have a very naive view of reality. Animals tear each other to pieces on a regular basis. Watch some Attenborough :-)
