( he uses the thing all the time) any help would be appreciated!! thank u

Giving it a rest won't help.

Turn off (you might also take out and replace the batteries and memory card) wait at least a few minutes (even overnight) and turned it on. If it still behaves the same, sorry, but something has gone wrong / broken / been shaken out of place. You will need to submit for service at a good camera repair place (Check with Sony for authorized service centres).

Try to get an estimate before leaving it so that you / your boyfriend can decide whether the cost of repair is worthwhile.

Try and see if you can get a estimate from local camera shop or by calling Sony. Usually getting a digital camera repaired is not worth it. Purchasing a new camera would most likely be the cheaper option.

Also If you bought your camera within 90 days. Your credit card company may cover for the damage. American Express and Visa have a "Accidental Protection" program free for some cardholders.

Try removing the batteries for about an hour. This should reset it.

Hopefully when you put the batteries back it, it will be ok.
