Although the other answers you have received are valid, one of the main reasons that bayonets are not attached is because it is virtually impossible to mount the bayonet with the other gear on the rifle.
When a soldier has a Surefire flaslight and a Pac-4 (an infrared laser sight) mounted on the forestock of his rifle, there is little to no room to mount a bayonet. Additionally, if the soldier has the M203 on his rifle, the bayonet stud is used to hold the grenade launcher.
Most soldiers today, in Iraq and Afghanistan, are carrying additional equipment on their rifles that prevents them from mounting a bayonet.
Hope this helps.

While in Iraq I did see, meet and travel with well over 100 US soldiers who carried the M-4 rifle. But why hasn't the military decided the M-4 as the standard issue assault rifle? The only immediate reason and obvious reason would be because of the cost involved.
And having bayonets attached to them would provide little if any combat value. Bayonets can fit on the M16 rifle but the are no required to be mounted.

We don't yet know all the details of this horrific event, but what has been reported so far is that the sergeant had recently been disciplined and had his weapon confiscated at the stress clinic. Apparently, some red flags had already been raised over his mental health and behavior. When he returned to the clinic later that day (don't yet know the reason), he brought with him another weapon and opened fire. I know you are not anti-American, but I do believe that anyone with certain pre-existing mental disorders can snap under excessive duress and / or stress regardless of nationality. We need to do a better job of identifying those that are at high risk for snapping and intervene sooner.

This is such a stupid question...I don't know why I am trying to explain it any better than anyone else already has.
We are all issued bayonets. There are several reason that you don't need to walk around with it on your freakin' weapon.
1. If you had to use it, you'd already be fu**ed anyways.
2. The blade would mess with the trajectory of your rounds (I wanted mine as accurate as possible)
3. We didn't go around poking f-ers with knifes. Why get that close when you can shot them from 20-50 yards away?
4. Even in close quarters combat, you would still be shooting them, not stabbing.
5. The insurgents have AK-47s, why would you take a knife to a gun fight.
I could go on and on. The main reason is that they are useless. They only thing I used mine for was to cut open my MREs.

The soldiers have the bayonet, but they are not affixed to the weapon except in cases where a "spear" would be helpful (crowd control). The bayonet is mainly used as a tool for digging, but if it's needed for hand to hand combat, it doesn't do any good when it's on your rifle.

Who's using a bayonet?
I've been here for almost 7 months and haven't seen the first bayonet on a weapon.

A bayonet is way out-dated. They still carry bayonets and knives, but hand to hand combat is rare nowadays.
A Master Key, or XM26 is way better for up close work anyways.

bayonets were used in past, at this age of morden technologies they are useless moreover keeping bayonet makes the length of the gun larger so in urban combat situations enemies might see your position around the cornors of walls .....
