Maybe if you walked out of the blood donation center and were hit by a bus, they couldn't keep it for you otherwise and it doesn't keep for that long anyway! Give blood and you will save the life of someone you've never met, and I'm sure you'd like to think that if you ever need it other people will have done the same for you so that you will live.

I had my prostate removed because of cancer. I donated blood for myself before the operation. It's actually a good idea. Your getting your own blood which you could trust, rather than someone Else's. In spite of the treatment of donated blood, some bad blood still slips through.

there are some programs here in québec which are called 'auto-transfusion'. its usually done when someone is supposed to have an operation that may require blood to be transfused. the blood donate can be used only one the person that donated it. no one else. if the blood is not used after the peremption date (42 days after blood collection) it is put in biological trash.

if you don't plan on having an operation and get infos on auto transfusion, i don't believe you could do that.

Here in the states , you can donate your own blood prior to a surgery.
If you don't need it, it will be given to someone who does.

You can't just donate to yourself for no reason.

It would seem hardly worth the effort would it? And besides donated blood does have a shelf life...

It is possible to donate your own blood in advance of an operation. You would probably need a course of iron supplements and a hormone such as epeotin beta for a period in advance of the procedure though.

Babes, if you need blood for an operation, depending on how bad the operation is you can sometimes save your own blood for it. It all depends on how bad you are. xxx
