My sister had bronchitis/bordering on pneumonia for close to three weeks during which she coughed a lot. She had back pain when she was sick, but is still experiencing lower back pain even though she's better. Do you think that the back pain is a side effect from the illness or from coughing?

Coughing. Do slow and even daily stretching to get more blood to the muscles in the back. This will help the back heal quicker and the pain go away faster.

Hope she is feeling better. NO sickness is good!!

We in the healthcare field HATE the subject of back pain. Why? Because most back pain is in your head (well, actually...ALL pain is in your head...but I digress).

It is most likely that she only sprained the supporting muscles in her lower back. Keep in mind that muscles do not get the same "memo" that SKIN does regarding healing.

When you cut yourself, the skin says that it needs to start healing NOW. When you injure muscles, they get a different memo that says "it's ok if you take a longer time to heal." Muscles can and usually do take a much longer time to heal - sometimes weeks.

The best thing to do is to take Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, store brand, etc.) and apply a cold or warm dressing to the area (whichever is tolerated best). Follow the directions on the bottle and don't take it on an empty stomach. Remember - heat relaxes muscles ; cold reduces swelling. Icy Hot patches can be worn while she is at work / school / home / wherever and can give a LOT of needed relief. Stretches are good AS LONG AS they don't cause much pain. If you are doing back stretches and you have pain while doing them, then listen to your body and STOP!

If she still has lower back pain in the next week, she should probably see her doctor. He may want to X-ray her lower back to make sure there isn't something more going on.

She could have some muscle pain from the coughing or she may have become a little dehydrated causing some irritation to her kidneys. She should definitely drink plenty of fluids and see a doctor if it doesn't go away or if she is having painful urination.

She could have hurt her back from all that coughing. She should talk to a doctor. I have found relief from lower back pain through massage therapy. Hope this helps.

No. it sounds like it is totally different, but i would definitely recommend that she see a doctor instead of relying on opinions from this website.
