I'm going on 2 months of being unemployed. My 1 year old kitty (Rocky) has a cold and I can't afford to take care of him anymore. I love him immensely but he will be better off with someone who can give him everything he needs. I live in Woodside, Queens, New York. Does anyone know how I go about finding him a good home?

Thanks so much for your responses! Unfortunately I can't ask my friends or family anymore because I've had to borrow some off of most of them to live. I'm 2 months behind in my rent and I swear I'm ready to give up. This situation is too much to handle.

There is a place in NY called the North Shore Animal League.

I'm pretty sure if they have room they can take your kitten in. As kittens tend to get adopted alot faster than an older cat.
Some rescues will have you sign him over and you can foster him (they will provide food/litter/toys) until someone wants to adopt him. Or you can offer to do this if they don't have room at their shelter.
Here is a list of shelters in NY: http://www.petfinder.com/pet.cgi
Thank you for trying to find a good home for him :]
If my sister wasnt allergic to cats I would deffinately take him! Since I only live in Jersey.
Good luck to you!

Does your kitty have a vet? If you explain your situation to your vet, you may be able to work something out to afford his care until you get back on your feet. If not, your vet will probably know where to look for adoption. It takes a person with devotion to their pet and a big heart to admit that they don't have the resources to properly care for a pet. Good for you. I hope that you can find a solution that doesn't mean permanent separation. If not, do not be ashamed of the fact that you did what was best for your cat. It takes real strength of character to do what is best for your animal when it results in great personal loss.

I'm so sorry to hear about your situation. There's a place in Manhattan called Bide-a-Wee. They're a no-kill shelter that will find homes for pets--I got my first kitty there. I'm not sure if they will accept animals from outside Manhattan, but you could find out. They probably won't accept a sick animal, though. Do you think your vet would treat your kitty if you go and explain your situation?
Good luck to you.

Oh my gosh, this made me cry! My husband was recently fired and I have been unemployed for several weeks. We have two cats, who are our only family. I would be absolutely devestated at having to give them away. I can only imagine how your heart must be breaking. If you didn't live all the way in NY, and you lived in OH, I would come get him for you until you were back on your feet. You got a lot of supportive answers with this question, and I agree with all of them. Talk to your vet and see if they could set up a payment plan for your kitten. A good vet will be willing to what they can to help you care for you cat in your time of need. I hope with my heart that you don't have to give away your cat, but bless you for putting its needs first and having its best interests at heart.

Try the humane society, or posting pictures and contact information at the vet's office. You could also post a picture and information on www.dogbreedinfo.com
Someone else who did that found a great home for her dog. Oh, yeah, even though it is called "dog breed info" it has lots of information on all kinds of animals. So, I'm sure you could post your kitty on their website. I hope Rocky finds a good home.

Best to take him to a shelter rather than risk homing him with someone you don't know.
Also, cats don't really get 'colds' - they get cat flu, which is often serious, and does need veterinary attention.
I'm sorry it's come to this for you, it must be heartbreaking, but I'm glad you're doing the responsible thing, unlike most people on these boards.

Have you talked to your friends and family? My family hates cats so mine wouldn't help out but my friends have banded together, stopping over with litter and food for my little guy when I was out of work for 9 months after a car accident. They didn't want to see me sitting at home all alone missing my kitty... As far as vet care, talk to your vet, they may allow you to help with filing or something in exchange for his care. Good luck! And thank you for being responsible about it instead of tossing him outside!!!

So sad. I would take him to a humane society. What color is he? That matters because a lot of black cats put in humane societies are there so long because of the stupid superstition that they have to be put to sleep... Anyway, there are a lot of potential owners out there who would love him. Perhaps if you have a friend who is a vet or a friend who has a friend who is a vet???

You can take it to the shelter (last option) See if a neighbor wants it, you can get someone to put an add in the newspaper. Or to keep the cat do one of those things to raise money to take it too the vet for treatment. Also put posters around if you deside to get someone to adopt it.Best of luck!
