No, there is no test to detect HPV in men.

Men usually find out they have HPV by developing warts. But, not every person with HPV develops warts, and it can take many months and even years to develop them. So, a person can have the virus for years and pass it around unknowingly before they realize they have it.

Nope. Right now there is no test for it for men. Women can get tested during a gynocological appointment and there is a immunization availible for women that protects against the 4 main types. Unfortunately, there's no shot for men yet. The only way a man would know for certain if he has HPV is if he developed genital warts, which are caused by one strain of the virus. Estimates say that 70% of the American population has some form of HPV, which can lay dormant for years with no symptoms. The only way to avoid it is abstaining from sex or wearing a condom every time you have sex.

Human Papilloma Virus
What is HPV?

HPV stands for Human Papilloma Virus. This is a very common sexually transmitted virus. An estimated 75 percent of the reproductive-age population has been infected with sexually transmitted HPV. A small fraction of men and women with HPV will develop genital warts. Another small fraction of women with HPV will develop cervical changes. Most people will have no changes.

How is it transmitted?
HPV is transmitted sexually through intimate genital to genital contact, including vaginal or anal intercourse or only rarely through oral sex. Transmission can also occur during genital skin to genital skin contact without sexual intercourse.

Does use of condoms reduce the risk of HPV transmission?
Using condoms or latex barriers may provide some protection but may not cover all infected areas.

Is there a cure for HPV?
Since HPV is a virus, there is no cure. However, new studies indicate that approximately 70-90% of people with HPV may clear the virus from the body within two years of infection. Re-infection is possible.

Yes! Skin swabs from the penis and urethra are the obvious first choice. But for gay men who have anal intercourse, then a rectal swab and culture are indicated as well. Men can get it in either place, depending on sexual proclivities. It is VITALLY important if a guy is "in the closet" that he have a medical doctor with whom he can be totally honest and that he tell the WHOLE truth to that doc. Otherwise the doc, assuming the patient is "straight" because he's married and/or has children will probably overlook the need for a rectal swab for testing purposes!

Same thing holds true for heterosexual women who enjoy anal intercourse with their partners. You can get HPV in both areas and the warts, etc., too! Get it treated! If you don't have it, get the immunization shots for it! You could save your life and those of your future partners, too! This HPV related / linked cancers are now preventable. Just take the time to check and do what is indicted in terms of either treatment or immunization. This can be wiped out in a single generation if we get tested and immunization against this becomes "standard" medical practice quickly!
