1. The most common and reliable source of bypass graft comes from the left internal mammary artery. It is an artery that normally dwells on the inside of the chest wall and has a back-up of the right internal mammary artery, supplying the same areas.
2. The saphenous vein from the leg is the next most common source of grafting.
3. The radial artery is on rare occasion used if either of the other targets are not suitable.

The LITA (left internal thoracic artery) and the RITA (right internal thoracic artery) are the best because one side is already connected to the subclavean artery that goes from the aorta to the arms. Usually the LITA is used as is but the RITA must be cut and reconnected to the Aorta because of its length. The saphenous vein from the leg is the next choice. Arteries are better choice than veins because veins have natural valves in them ( because venous flow is in one direction only ) and they have to be turned about when used to replace a coronary artery. These valves can cause a stenosis and problems in the future. Good luck.
