I had a chub of RAW dog food in my freezer - ground chicken w/bones, veggies, etc. My boyfriend cooked it and fed it to the dogs! I'm worried about the bone splinters. They are small (I looked at some of the cooked left-overs) but am worried.

I really can't afford a large vet bill right now but would prefer that then having something horrible happen. What should I do???

Food was a pre-packaged dog food meant to be fed raw. Raw chicken bones (espcially ground up are OK to feed dogs). However, cooked chicken bones are not OK. The bone is ground up but now that it's cooked - it looks like there are bone fragments about 1/4 of an inch long - this is what worries me.

Thank you everyone! They both seem to be fine - THANK GOODNESS! Both had really smelly gas (one the first day and one the second day) and my small girl (11lbs) didn't have bm yesterday. This kind of concerned but this morning she had a bm and everything looked normal.

Thanks again for helping me through this!!!!! This is my first time - how to I get the question listed as "resolved"?

If they were very small, then the dogs should be fine. There is not much that you can do since they already ate them, especially because inducing vomiting would cause more damage. I would just keep an eye on them, and if you see any bloody or really dark stools or vomiting, call the vet.

If the chicken bones are ground then I would not worry about them. Usually bone pieces smaller than 1 cm are not a problem. In addition, cooked chicken bone will degrade faster than raw in the digestive tract. Watch for signs of a tense or painful belly, depression or vomiting. If this occurs then you should bring him to a vet. Also, I don't think your BF would feed your dog a large bone he saw as he was cooking the food :)

First, have you had him to the vet to make sure there isn't a medical cause for his lack of appetite?? Dogs do not just change eating behaviours for no reason. If he checks out ok with vet then go back to his normal dry food unless vet says otherwise. If hungry he will eat. He is no dumbie and now has you feeding him all kinds of neat food instead of normal doggie food. I'd love to eat steak all the time but that isn;t healthy for me. Nothing wrong with flavoring up his dry food but not as a constant way to get him to eat. Did you happen to recently change his dry food?? Something changed a few months back or he needs to see the vet. But going to special efforts with meats, etc is not the answer long term. Good quality dog foods are formulated to provide the nutrients for overall health. You will end up making him a picky eater.

I would monitor the dogs closely, watch for any signs of "off" behavior.

Give your vet a call in the morning to help ease your mind.

Kudos to you for feeding raw, but next time, rap the boyfriend on the head with the chub so he remembers not to cook it.

Keep an eye on them for the day...and if they do start acting odd try to take them to the vet during normal hours...after hours your talking about atleast 300 a pop per dog..
