How far will the contents of a tomato (say, a modest 4-ouncer) squirt when hammered on? Are there any especially effective pounding techniques? Implements that work better than others?

Cherry tomatoes work well for sniper attacks... they are small and its easy to direct the 'shot' (with practice) at your target. Big juicy Rutgers or beefsteak tomatoes work well for a 'shotgun' effect if you want to slime a group or can't aim well. A big wooden mallet (like Gallagher used) works best to deliver the blow.

I'd say go with the Cherry Tomatos. I had a date a number of years ago at a great sushi restaurant. The salad was your typical lettuce and carrot concoction with cherry tomatos. As I was sitting across the table from my date, I bit into one and the contents shot out of my mouth like a cannon and flew directly onto his plate and the napkin on his lap. To say I was mortified is an understatement! When we both finished laughing (which took a while I assure you!) he simply asked, "I only have one question for you" I said, "Ok, what is it?" and he, very lovingly looked into my eyes and asked:
"Did any of that stay in your mouth, or did I get the full shot?"
Needless to say, we erupted in laughter again and nearly got thrown out! So, definitely the cherry tomatos! :)

Pound on it with a blunt, but not flat, object. Something like a bowling pin.

Forget a can... just use some ketchup packets and stomp on them.
