Where did you hear that it doesn't hurt the animal to force it to give milk?
I'm not a vegan or vegetarian, and I love milk. However, I am under no illusion as to how milk is obtained.
Cows, which generate milk solely to feed their calves and then stop lactating (just like humans and any other mammals) are kept in a constant state of milk production and 'milked' by machines or people for up to a year after the calf has grown up. Then, because the quality of the milk goes down so far after they give birth, the cow is given hormones to encourage more milk production and even bred again to make more calves in order to keep up the supply and quantity of milk.
I don't know if it 'hurts' or not, but it certainly isn't among the things that would be on my schedule if I were a cow.

Actually only vegans abstain from eating dairy. Vegetarians just don't eat meat. Many vegans do it because they think the process is unnatural -the cows are impregnated more often than they should be and aren't treated well in the process of getting the milk, etc. Also, some people don't think that it's healthy to drink dairy. We are the only mammals that continue drinking milk after infancy, and it's real purpose is to help infants become big and fat. The dairy ads that claim milk is a healthy part of a diet to lose weight are based on tests that compared it with drinking sugary soda. It depends on the person, but those are some reasons.

It does hurt the animal to get the milk.
You should maybe watch some videos or read some articles about what goes on in the dairy industry.
Here are some links:
http://www.torturedcows.com/dairy/23/Milk_myths.htm
http://www.factoryfarming.com/dairy.htm
http://www.milksucks.com/
You should check out those links. It does hurt the animals, because its not just a small family milking thier pet cow into a bucket. It dosen't work like that. There are huge dairy farms, and these cows are repeatedly impregnated so that they will produce milk, this is not natural. They are hooked up to these milking machines that create painful infections.
Also when the cow is impregnated naturally it makes milk for its calf, on these farms it's baby is taken away from it pretty much as soon as it is born. So imagine being imprisoned and forced to have babies, only for them to be ripped away from you as soon as they are born. And I'm not even going to go into the suffering that occurs from the veal industry, as a result of the dairy industry. But first link and the second explains it pretty well(the veal industry).

Sometimes it's a way of life. The philosophy that they don't consume any products that come from an animal, period. Also, if you think about it, humans are the ONLY species that drink another species milk (like cows, goats, etc.). You will never find cows drinking goat milk or vice-versa. Interesting thing to note. I guess if anything, they want to stick with what's natural and eating cheese/drinking milk is unnatural.

Vegetarians do drink milk and consume dairy products. A vegan does not eat meat, and consumes no diary products either.

Vegetarians do drink dairy. But vegans don't because they think it is wrong to profit off of animals and milk comes from cows.

Did you know that humans are the only species to drink the milk of another animal? How disgusting!!!!
Diary products are also the worst possible way to get calcium. In fact, your body has to leach calcium from your bones in order to excrete the by-products of consuming animal products, a process that contributes to osteoporosis and kidney disease at the same time. There are far better dietary ways to get your calcium. and long-term vegans, in fact, need less calcium than do omnivores or lacto-vegetarians.
Cow's milk is intended for calves.

Lacto comes from the be conscious "milk" so in case you're a "lacto-vegetarian" you devour dairy products. regardless of in case you do not devour it each and on a daily basis. you won't be able to be vegan sometime and vegetarian the subsequent.

because it is still an animal byproduct. What I dont get is why vegan eat certian vegetables that have been fertilized with animal byproducts.
Vegetarians just don't eat meat. They can still have dairy.
