"Because it tastes so damn good!"
People think that the momentary pleasure that they get from eating meat is more important than the life of the animal. Also, the feeble-minded among us don't want to deliniate from the norm ...(Ma and Pa did it, so must I, lest I be considered a 'freak'...)
I'm glad, to be quite honest, that these people live much shorter lives than us vegetarians and vegans - maybe we'll be able to retire with the satisfaction that the morons we take flack from on YA have all died slow and painful deaths from heart disease and/or cancer!! I certainly hope that they'll face some heavy consequences for their choices when they get to the 'afterlife' (if there is such a thing) as well! I'm such a sadist - toward arrogant and apathetic (it's not that they're 'uninformed', it's that they don't care) morons, at least.

My parents are meat eaters, but I've been a strict vegetarian since childhood because as soon as I was old enough to understand that meat came from animals, I refused to eat it. I'm not a preacher, I've just always loved animals. I think that each person has the right to determine their own values, beliefs and ways of life. For me though, the thing that is most "wrong" about the way our society consumes meat is not so much the fact that animals are being eaten, but the quality of life (lack thereof) that the animals are subjected to. The idea of eating something that was bred to be slaughtered (and treated inhumanely) is not appealing to me.

I agree with you. But you can't get upset about it because there is always going to be someone eating meat. and there is always going to be someone wearing fur, it's sucks but thats how it is. All you can do is live your life the best way you see fit, and educate the people like some posters above me, about the truth of being a vegetarian and a vegan. That you are not malnourished. You can't let it get you down. There will always be some naive idiot meat- eater saying that being a vegetarian will make you sick, But you will have the satifaction of knowing that you will be living a compasionate, healthy, and LONG life.
Just for the record, I am not against meat- eaters and I am not being judgemental. My boyfriend is a meat- eater (that I am slowly converting, not on purpose, but because he has a brain of his own and sees that being a vegan has helped me). He just told me the other day that he thinks he wants to be a vegetarian :)

As we learn about the ways animals are exploited, it’s common to feel anger and frustration. But we need to make sure our emotions don’t overwhelm us—to be effective animal advocates, we should be teachers, not fighters.
Most of us weren’t raised as vegetarians. While we learn more about animal exploitation, it’s often difficult to remember that—just like our friends and relatives who aren’t yet vegetarian—we, too, once contributed to animal suffering.
Because of this, it’s often helpful to ask ourselves, “Why did I become vegetarian?” Chances are, it wasn’t because someone called us murderers or condemned our food choices. Likely, we adopted vegetarian eating because someone helped us see that choosing compassion over killing was a simple way to reduce suffering, while improving our health and the environment.
You can be the animals’ most effective ambassador by leading by example and teaching others with patience. The animals would thank you if they could.

I love how the first 8 answers came from blood guzzling meat eaters.
We do not need meat to survive and the 8 people up top are perfect examples of people who have been fooled into eating it because it's "natural"... It's not. Try visiting India and meeting people who would not know a hamburger from a hot dog yet they are perfectly healthy.
And all of the people below Mike who had something ignorant to say, and for all the thumbs up's on the ignorant comments, I have only this to say. What the heck are you people doing in the v&v section?

You need meat to be healthy, have you ever seen a stronger than average vegetarian?
I would not like to be skinned alive, but I am lucky that I happen to be at the very top of the food chain, and to not take advantage of that fact would just be stupid. Do you really think if cows suddenly became smart and organized, they wouldn't kill us and grind us into humanburgers?

Gee whiz! All these meat eaters have just convinced me that all these decades of being a veggie were just a worthless waste of time!
I have decided that they are right about all this food chain stuff and I want to be on top instead of being down on the bottom with all the other herbivores.
Since I am going to be at the top of the food chain I think I'll start by eating tasty long pork!
After all, if g_d made us to eat meat and wants us to eat meat why shouldn't I eat meat!!
But since I'm now at the top of the food chain I'm going to start by eating people!!
After all, people are made of meat!!!!

Well, I am vegetarian, too, but since you've only been one for a couple of months, why did you eat meat before? I think you can probably answer your own question.

People eat it because they feel it's part of life, like the circle of life.. Humans are the top predators. Honestly, it's a bit hypocritical of you to say "How can you justify the killing of innocent animals" because innocent animals are killed for leather, gelatin: in many candies, Pop-Tarts, some photo paper, jello, most yogurt, and also many types of cheese contain retina, which is from the stomach of cows. So if you're not eating or wearing any of those things, you can say oh, the poor little innocent animals. If not, get some other good reasons for not eating animals because that is an extremely ignorant argument.

1) The animal population would get out of control unless we continue to eat and kill them or unless we found a governement agency willing to fund the cost to find and spay/nueter all animals currently around and then current species would eventually all die out. Which option sounds better to you?
2) Everyone has different tastes and some people really like the taste of meat
3) To get the necessary protien intake your body needs meat is an excellent source, so is beans but most people want variety in thier diet.
4) Its really not your place to dictate to others what they should eat. Just like religion and politics wether or not to be a vegetarian or meat-eater is each individuals personal choice and preference and should be left alone.
5) I totally agree with the fur thing. Fur farming has GOT TO STOP!
