I remember when AIDS first came out. I was very, very cautious. By 1988, I was asking men to have HIV/AIDS tests before I would have sex with them, and even then we used condoms. I remember that Playboy and Cosmo both came out with articles at the same time (January 1988?) that said that AIDS wasn't a heterosexual disease and heterosexuals shouldn't worry. I still think that was really, really irresponsible. Oh, and the one guy who said he wouldn't use condoms because of fear of AIDS? He turned out to have a girlfriend and was trying to get some on the side. Another guy accused me of giving him herpes AFTER I told him that I tested negative and he knew we used condoms. He said he couldn't believe the other woman he was sleeping with had given it to him, even though they didn't use condoms and she hadn't been tested since she hadn't had sex in five years, and my reaction was, "What other woman?" So, a lot of guys may cheat, but condoms have kept me safe. A responsible guy says yes to condoms, and responsible people insist on them. So, I feel that fear of STDs has actually kept me safe and kept me away from men who were jerks anyway.
