When systolic and diastolic blood pressures fall into different categories, the higher category should be used to classify blood pressure level. For example, 160/80 mmHg would be stage 2 hypertension (high blood pressure).
(Ages 18 Years and Older)
Blood Pressure Level (mmHg)
Category Systolic Diastolic
Normal 120 and 80
Prehypertension 120-139 or 80-89
High Blood Pressure
Stage 1 Hypertension 140–159 or 90–99
Stage 2 Hypertension 160 or 100

The American Heart Association actually just recently revised their guidelines and have determined that the acceptable norm is about 110/70. They felt that physicians were too often seeing people that were in early stages of hypertension (130/85 range) and not talking about ways to decrease or change lifestyle. While having a blood pressure a little over 110/70 isn't a death sentence, it is just a warning to keep an eye on it and if it continues to rise to make some lifestyle changes. Just a note, a single high reading does not diagnose someone with hypertension. There has to be a consistent trend before being treated ( or at least there should be).

Ideal is 120/80 or 120/70. It's still considered normal up to 130/80. A top number of 115 or 110 is also considered normal.

In adults, the systolic pressure should be less than 120 mmHg and the diastolic pressure should be less than 80 mmHg. Hypertension is sustained elevation of resting systolic BP (⥠140 mm Hg), diastolic BP (⥠90 mm Hg), or both.
