People say that to irritate vegetarians and animal activists. It's equivalent to calling a democrat a demoncrap, or a republican a repuke.
But there actually is an interesting story involving the peta.org site. Anti-PETA (the organization) people acquired the peta.org domain and set up a site for "People Eating Tasty Animals." The real PETA was at peta.com
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals claimed it was a violation of their trademark and that the anti-peta group was cybersquatting. After several levels of appeals, the courts decided it was indeed a trademark violation and ordered the domain to be turned over to the real PETA. It was a landmark case dealing with domain names and intellectual property.
This is quite ironic, especially if you go visit meat.org (which is operated by peta.)

Because they have nothing better to do than to make up dumb acronyms to feel cool. (even though Peta is annoying)
I guess I'm partly guilty of this though. Me and a friend of mine made up an organization called PITA (which consisted of only 4 people lol) , People Interested in Toking Alot. But I would never make up something like that to make fun of vegetarians/vegans, or any group of people for that matter... that was just for our own personal enjoyment.lol.

Because it's funny. PETA is into animal rights, and "people eat tasty animals" is exactly the opposite of their philosophy, even though it does fit with PETA.

It's a play off of the PETA organization. I have seen it on many T-shirts and such. Its used as a knock against PETA because of that organizations practices of lies and deceit to force their values onto other people instead of just giving people the facts and letting them decide for themselves.

Look it up. PETA has euthanized 14000 healthy cats and dogs since 1998. That hardly counts as an animal advocacy organization to me!

Because thats what 99 % of people do except the wacko wankers from PETA. PETA suck. For example they protest against mulesing sheep, when mulesing of sheep is necessary to stop them being fly blown and eaten alive by maggots. So these wankers would much prefer to see an animal eaten alive by maggots then have a little bit of skin snipped off when they are babies.
