have a theme party..since it will be just friends, everyone can dress up and not be embarrassed...speaking of sheets, how about a toga party.....you can still drape sheets, and have a buffett type meal like they did back then....

Well since you have a big backyard, you can cook out. Have hamburgers, hotdogs, brats, or even chicken. You can get a few checkered table mats and place them on the ground so that your guests can sit on them.
You can also have a campout at night. You may need to check with your local fire department about having a controlled fire in your back yard, but it would be fun and you guys can toast marshmallows and tell ghost stories

I love having a Hawaiian Luau in the yard. Ask your guest to wear shorts and flowered shirts or dresses. Buy some leis and a few flowers for decorating and for the girl's hair. That puts everyone in a festive mood. More decorating with coconuts, pineapples, banana leaves and grass skirts. Play Hawaiian music and serve barbeque pork and things made with the above foods mentioned. Hey, yes, I'd love to come.

Well my first thought is indian or middle eastern themed so you can tent the back yard with sheer like fabrics and cover the floor with pillows for seating. Can serve hummus and pita and kebabs etc
If you want something more american just use couches and fluffly overstuffed pillows in bright summer colors for a great laidback bbq theme

Mystery parties are always fun, and great for coming up with themes. For example, if "a person is murdered on the beach", you can decorate your backyard with a Hawaiian theme. There are lots of pre-made mystery games available.

if you know anyone with any sort of projector, you can hang a big sheet across the back yard (like on a big clothesline) and show a movie!
