You CAN NOT get ANY STDs from a toilet.

This is seriously one of the most common myths about STDs.

STDs are almost ALWAYS spread by some sort of sexual contact - hence the acronym STD (SEXUALLY transmitted disease). There are other ways, like childbirth, but this is pretty rare.

I have had genital herpes and HPV for over 6 years now. I lived with my brothers and parents for most of those 6 years and NONE of them ever contracted either virus from me. I've also had several family members and boyfriends (now exs) use the toilet after me and NONE of them contracted either virus. They are just not spread that way!

You can't get STD from toilet seats by simply sitting on them. You need to be in contact with a contaminated source through the passing of bodily fluids (seman, vaginal secretions, oral sex either way). Unless you have a wide open wound on you tukas and sit in a puddle of someone elses secretions, I wouldn't worry about catching anything. If you do see such a puddle on a toilet, you'd be smart to find another stall or bathroom altogether. I'd worry more about who left the first puddle, and if their coming back to leave a second one.

Generally, no, you can't get STD's through toilet seats: the germs die too quickly. You can get some STD's through a blood transfusion, such as HIV or syphilis, but the blood is tested for that. If someone tells you they got an STD through something other than sex or using needles for drugs, I'm not sure I'd believe them.

the question is, is it CONCEIVABLE? The answer is yes, it is technically possible, although incredibly remote. You'd have to leap onto the toilet seat within scant seconds of the infected person getting off, the toilet seat would have to be covered with some transferrable medium (NASTY! Clean the seat first!!), and you'd have to have an open communication method (open wound, mucous membrane in contact, etc)

I'd think my chances are better of hitting the lottery, but is it POSSIBLE? yes.

Toilet seat transmission of an STD is the biggest myth going.

As for Alexmarr's anecdote (above) the two soldiers had sex and were too embarrassed to admit that so hence the toilet story.

It is possible but improbable. It is very hard to catch it from a toilet seat as most of the bacteria will die almost instantly being in the open air rather than a warm wet place. You would almost have to sit down on the toilet immediately after the infected person did. Now with Herpes if they have sores on their mouth you can get it from kissing or sharing a drink or food with the person.

Most of all that junk is false. THERE MUST BE TRANSFER OF FLUID (either blood or semenal fluids etc). It would be possible if both of the people using the same toilet had opens wounds in those areas for a transfer of fluid to take place, if what your friend said was true then alot more people would have herpes etc from using public restrooms anywhere.

It is very difficult to get an STD without any sexual contact; thus the reason they are called SEXUALLY transmitted diseases. The only STDs that can be transmitted otherwise are Trich., which can be passed by using a wet towel that someone with the disease has previously used (or wearing their swimwear) and the other is crabs, which could be transmitted through clothing, towels, bedding--but both are short-lived outside of their host, so the chances are still slim.

Yes i was in the army with a guy who got crabs from a toilet seat and they tracked it to another private who was afraid to say something. They both had to come to us and tell us hey we got crabs and we need to use one toilet and only us until they were gone. They also had to use a special shampoo and a comb for weeks. Yes be careful that is why many woman squat in a public urinal also because they are downright nasty.
