No. Its no joke. In some regions of China, cats are infact considered as a delicacy and are reared like cattle for meat.

Each such a cat sells for about $2 or $3 and is the staple for poor people from Chinese tribes who have not benefited from that country's economic boom.

The same holds true for certain parts of Philippines, where people use stray cats for food. And you can find cat on the menu of some restaurants, right in the neighborhood of where Americans had the Clarke Air Base near Angeles City in that country.

Eating cats or felines has been a tradition in many Far East countries but restaurants opened by these people in EU and US rarely offer such exotic food. A rare one somewhere, might be offering these illegally due to strict animal protection laws in the developed world. But such a restaurant would try and attract only their ethnic clientele rather than open for everyone.

Therefore, you can relax and gorge away at your favorite Chinese restaurant- they wont serve cat or snake etc, unless SPECIFICALLY licensed to do so by local health and food authorities.

I've never heard of cats being consumed as food, but I have heard that the Chinese had used cat ingredients in the traditional Chinese medicine.

I've also heard that the Vietnamese eat cats and that Chinese restaurants use human cadavers. I've also heard that the French people eat diseased geese liver and snails and that horsemeat is a perfectly acceptable meat for some Europeans... Just cultural differences, don't be so upset at the Chinese. Just do your part in stopping animal abuse at home.

No. Not in "western countries". It is against the law on probably all english speaking countries.

They might eat cats in China though. But remember, as much as we might find the thought distasteful, different cultures have different values. You might be disgusted with eating dogs and cats but do not give a second though of eating a steak. Yet, IF you are Indian, you'd be disgusted at the thought of eating a cow. Hey, Peruvian in the Andes eat guinea pigs! (and there are reasons for that)

Living in multicultural society that has all wonderful idea for great cuisines and having travelled overseas, I am open minded to try most food. Within the right context, I probably would be willing to try cats as long as I know it is DEFINITELY NOT just any cats picked up off the streets. It would have to be "farmed" or bred for that purpose.

Thank you for allowing me to present a different perspective on this subject (and the two points)

If you mean domestic cats, it's just an urban legend. But I have been to restaurants in China which serve civet cats as they are considered as game.

people, every race on this planet eats somethings that others deem as disgusting or wrong. None of these incidents compare to the routine/ongoing, grand scale, none-survival oriented slaughters of wildlives held by our fellow human beings that are not only cruel but causing catastrophic destruction to the Eco system:

Global warming (P.bear, seals, whales, butterflies, honey bees, birds, fish, frogs......)
annual baby seal(clubbed and skinned alive) hunt to get their baby fur for the fashion designers in Paris, NY, London,....etc and how many people will freeze to death without it????

Haha I have heard that many times!Tho I don't think there is any truth to it?!Maybe in China they do,but I think it would be illegal here in the U.S. to eat/cook a domestic pet/animal!Either way I hope there is no truth to that,I love Chinese food!!

No, they are run by the same food guide lines as every other restuarant. They would never pass a Health Inspection either.
