It goes back at least as far as the ancient Egyptians who lived thousands of years ago.

They gave their pyramid builders stone-ground wheat flour for bread. The evidence is the worn-down teeth from grindstone debris that ended up in the bread as seen in the teeth from the skeletons of those workers.

Is that far back enough?
