I am a 26-year-old female who is very seriously considering going the "Vegan route" in the near future. Here's the problem: I am a peritoneal dialysis patient. (For those of you who are not familiar with the medical term/disease, I suffer from kidney failure and have to use a glucose-based solution to filter toxins from my body.) As a P.D. patient, my diet MUST consist of high protein, low phosphorus, and potassium rich foods. Could anyone suggest some possible menu items I could eat that with satisfy my dietary requirements? Any response you could provide will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I would recommend that you get in touch with PCRM (Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine) as they did a research study on this a few years ago. I'm sure they'd have some good advice for you.

Here is their contact info:

I work in a Care home our dialysis patients often a take protien powders in meals, especially No Dairy diets. We try tofu but they do not like it. Most drink soy milk or simalar products. Try to snack on nuts, berries and bananas (for potassium). Hope this helps. Always consult your doctor before a drastic diet change.

Some of the foods I can think of that contain potassium are avocado, bananas, pulses, dried fruit and powdered milk drinks.
Vegetables soaked in cold water will loose some of their potassium content.
I know it isn't much but I hope it is of some help.
I am certain you will get better ideas when you go in for treatment next.
Good Luck

Beans and nuts are loaded with protein. Even a whole wheat bagel has 10 grams of protein on it's own. Drink a glass of soymilk with that and there's about half of your daily supply of protein right there : )
