The medical word for blood in the urine is hematuria. As you said, it could be an infection anywhere in the urinary tract (the urethra, bladder, ureters, or kidneys). It could be a kidney stone especially if you also have pain. Dark urine could also be caused by muscle breakdown that can occur after strenuous exercise. The other common thing is many different medicines can cause red or dark urine. It could also be a problem with the kidney called a glomerulonephritis or interstitial nephritis, especially if you have other symptoms such as edema (swelling in your body). People can get glomerulonephritis after a strep throat infection. If blood in the urine continues to occur, it can be a bleeding disorder or even something like bladder cancer (this is more common in the elderly). A person with hematuria (blood in the urine) should see their doctor for an evaluation.
