24hrs ago, I aspirated a small piece of salad into my lung. I began to gag and cough, but dont know if I got it out. The hard coughing has gone. I cough a little still and a small pain in my lung where I believe the food went. How long before I get sick If I am going too? What might happen to me? Please no BS answers.

aspiration pneumonia is the most obvious thing...i would watch for persistent coughing ( a sign of a foreign body), fevers and possibly wheezing....
you will need to see your doc and request a Chest X-Ray...(the salad will not show up, but the infection will)
good luck

Usually if you inhale a piece of food, the cough reflex will clear it out. You may have coughed so hard that you are now a little sore, but unless you have fever or are coughing up anything but white or clear mucus, I wouldn't worry.

Usually only older persons with poor cough reflexes get aspiration pneumonia, and they get sick pretty quickly. The worst thing to aspirate is a peanut. I don't understand why, but that's what I learned in nursing school.

In the future, eat slower, take smaller bites and don't talk with your mouth full. And if you develop fever or a worsening cough, see your doctor right away.

I seriously doubt you actually aspirated the lettuce. Your cough reflex will be activated in the upper airway, above the level of the glottis (space between the vocal cords). In a healthy person, the reflex is very strong, and it will eject a foreign body with no problem. Your "lung pain" is probably due to a muscle pull in your rib cage which happened from the paroxsysmal coughing.

If you truely know you aspirated some food you need to go see a doc to be sure it hasn't caused aspiration pneumonia.
