1) Have any of you found good soy yogurts? I would like a list of the ones that are good--and not good! i tried o'soy from stonyfields and found it very gross, though i like soy milk. i would like info on this and other possible yogurt substitutes, please.

2) i have found that (i know, it's gross, sorry) being vegan leads to flatulence. do any vegans have tips on avoiding this (such as foods to eat/not eat/etc.)? thanks a lot.

1. I like the Silk Peach soy yogurt. I've also tried wholesoy which was ok, but not as good.

2. I get tons of flatulence if I drink chocolate soy milk, or if I overeat in general. Tips to avoid it? Just don't overdo it =) If you don't overeat, you can hold it in until your next visit to the bathroom.

1.)Soy Yogurt (making of)

Yogurt is a tasty and nutritious product made by fermenting cow’s milk to form an acidic gel. Soy yogurt is less acidic than regular yogurt and should have widespread consumer appeal. The steps for making soy yogurt are as follows:
Manufacture the soymilk.
Formulate the soymilk with sucrose and dextrose.
Pasteurize and homogenize.
Inoculate and incubate.
The culture must be carefully maintained. The temperature and time of incubation should be carefully controlled. The soymilk must be properly pasteurized to prevent contamination. A small amount of added sugar promotes the fermentation. The use of different sugars or sugar mixtures produce somewhat different flavors in the final product.

Soy Yogurt Recipe (University of Illinois)
Ingredients:
4 cups soymilk either commercial or home made
2 to 3 tablespoons plain commercial yogurt (Dannon Plain Yogurt, etc)
5 tablespoons cane sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla flavor or other flavor as desired
Optional: Fruit preserves
Method:
1. Heat the pasteurized soy milk to 194°F (90°C) .
2. Add sugar to the heated soymilk base and keep the temperature at 194°F (90°C), heating only long enough to dissolve the sugar. Add flavor.
3. Cool the milk to 122oF (50°C). Add the commercial yogurt, gently mix the contents thoroughly and avoid the formation of foam. Pour the milk into cups and then seal with a cap.
4. Immediately place the cups into an incubator, or an oven at 106°F (41°C) for approximately 5 hr. After 4-1/2 hr of incubation, closely monitor the pH of the yogurt. When the pH reaches 4.3 or desired sourness, transfer the yogurt to a refrigerator at 36°F (2oC).
5. After 12 hr refrigeration, the yogurt can be served. Option: To make yogurt with fruit on bottom, place 2 to 3 teaspoons fruit preserve into the bottom of each of the yogurt cups. Gently fill the mixture from step 3 into yogurt cups to near the top and then seal with a cap. Soy yogurt can be made by a yogurt maker following the instruction.

Branka 's Soy Yogurt
I have been making soy yogurt also. When the soy milk is cool enough to leave your finger in the milk without feeling uncomfortable you can add the culture. I put the milk into a mason jar, wrap the jar in a blanket and leave it in a warm place. When the soy yogurt is finished it will look a little soupy--the water and chunks of cultured soy milk will have separated. I make sunflower seed cream with the contents of the jar. It tastes close to sour cream and is good over salad or potatoes. Here's the recipe for sunflower seed cream: Peel 1 lemon and cut it into chunks and put it into a blender. Add about 1 cup of sunflower seeds, about a teaspoon of salt, some onion powder and garlic powder. Add some soy yogurt and start blending. Keep adding more soy yogurt as the blender needs it to keep blending the sunflower seeds. Makeit as thick or soupy as you like.

1) Silk Live all the way! It's the nicect one I've had and I've tried the lot! Stay away from O'Soy- it's fairly disgusting

2) Yup! It's like walking around with a line of ducks following you. It's the way it is though, there's nothing for it! I find the benefits outweigh the farts though, and I sort of think farts are amusing anyway ^^
Perhaps just experiment with foods, I know there are certain vegetables that have more of a gas-inducing effect than others. But things like beans are staples, and shouldn't be avoided.

I heard that once your body gets used to what you're eating, the gas will not be as bad. Not really sure if it's true, but I hope so! I think moderation of what you eat might help also, because (though I'm not veg right now) I don't notice a real difference from when I eat what are considered gas producing foods like cauliflower. I think I heard, too, that gas from vegetarians doesn't smell as gross as even though it's more, let's say, musical...

Sorry dont know answer to your 1st question. No. 2, vegetarians tend to eat a lot of beans for the protein content. Beans lead to excessive gas because it ferments in the stomach. If you consume lots of beans, swallow one antacid pill. It makes you burp out the gas ( which s equally gross?)

i really really like silk brand soy-yogurt. (the key lime pie is especially good) i've never tried any other brand.
as far as your second question goes, lol, they make a lot of homeopathic cures for gas, but drink a lot of water and stay away from foods you know will bloat you like broccoli and cauliflower.

eat fruits and stuff like that before the other stuff during your meal as fruits are faster to digest. Otherwise they rot in your stomach and create flatulence.

I don't mind the gas from my vegan wife.

We harvest the dickens out of it to power our methane fueled Prius.
