I am a vegetarian and I constantly hear about people being veggie or vegan just because they hear its a hot thing in hollywood. My brother lives in LA and always tells me that he knows a load of vegetarians that do it because its a trend but they always cheat and eat meat or they cant follow through with it. Sometimes when I tell people I'm a vegetarian, they look at me as a follower because it seems like a trend, when I'm actually doing it to be a leader and I have to be very headstrong and brush off all the insults I get for being vegetarian. Anyone else feel the same way?

And flesh eaters, please stop answering my questions. I posted it in the veggie section for a reason. Go choke on a hamburger.

Being veggie is *not* a trend...

Claiming to be veggie *IS* a trend.

In some ways it does seem to be a trend, that is probably why some people return to eating meat... they do not consider exactly what is involved. For me, I ate meat for the first 47 years of my life and when I saw how animals were treated in slaughterhouses, I stopped eating meat that day. When I discovered how the dairy and egg industry works, I became vegan. For me it is not a trend; it was taking responsibility for the pain my actions (when I was not vegan) cause to so many animals. Now, my actions are congruent with my beliefs. Loving meat has nothing to do with it.... I did love meat. I just had to learn a different way of cooking and living. @ Daisy - oh, here you go again..... why don't you give us the link to that study again? When I read it, it did not specify that eating habits of those who got "sick"... and it didn't specify what "sick" meant. If you know anything about scientific method, you know that without this information, this is NOT A SCIENTIFIC study. You are ONCE AGAIN trying to put FALSE truths into people's heads. Why do you continually do that? Do you work for the food industry?

no,
it is a healthy way of life. Da Vinci was a vegetarian, was he following a trend? Monks in alot of countries are vegans, so is the Dali Lama(sorry if I misspelled that). Would you call not be racist or not stealing a trend? Just because it's something that is gaining popularity, does not mean it's a trend. It is just a good thing that more people are begining to take part in.

In some small cases it may be, but it's been around for a long time. In India with over 1 billion people, around 200-400 million or so are vegetarian. So they may have more vegetarians than the whole population of the US. Hinduism has been practiced before Christ, so they've had a long history of it.

I've read some of the celebrities say they do it because they believe in it or they want to be more healthy, some might just do it to follow other people, but so what. In LA almost everything can be a trend. In the end everyone does it for their own reasons.

For some people, yes, it is a trend. Currently vegetarianism is somewhat popular, even if those individuals are really just in it for the label and still eat fish, chicken, etc.

I'm not going to waste my time arguing with those people, because honestly, there is no point. Besides, whatever reduction in meat consumption is occuring is good for the environment.

For me, it is a lifestyle. When I originally became vegetarian, my family treated it as a passing phase. After over two years as a vegetarian, at Thanksgiving, many people expressed their surprise that I "was still doing that" because their experiences with it were with the trend and not actual vegetarianism. Vegetarianism on a whole has been around since ancient times, so in itself it is not a trend, however, I would say that lately it has been receiving quite a bit of spotlight.

I don't think being a vegetarian is a trend, the people who do it to be cool are the ones who can't stick with it.(ie Fish/chicken eating vegetarians).

Its not a trend for me. I haven't eaten meat since I was like 9. But yes, I think it's trendy these days, but who cares? Just stay true to yourself and everything will be ok.

For some people it is a trend, for some people it is a lifestyle. People who are doing it only to lose weight and people who are veg because they think it is 'cool' and 'original' follow it like a trend. But people who are doing it for animals and want to improve their overall health forever, not just lose weight, follow a vegetarian lifestyle.
But, no matter what the reason for being veg, or how long you intend to be veg, I guess it's better than not being a vegetarian at all, even if you are only veg for short period of time. Still, I wish more people who went veg stuck with it.
Well, just my opinion. I hope I made sense, because sometimes I just type whatever comes to my head with no editing whatsoever, and it turns out as gibberish.

Hear , hear about the meaties hassling you - they should be ashamed attacking us peace loving vegetarians. If you want to tell someone how great it is to eat the stuff ,do it in general food !
I'm a vegan , it is not a phrase and I won't grow out of it. I think that you have to be emotionally mature and aware about your planet to be any kind of vegetarian these days and well done to those of us who have made that leap . It is a lasting lifestyle change. I can't see my self ever waking up and thinking , "not killing animals for dinner - what planet was I on?"

Sounds like your brother and mine should meet up and eat their medium rare steak sandwiches together over a nice coronary!!!
