HPV is spread through FRICTION contact. it does NOT require any fluid exchange whatsoever. However, the HPV strains that cause genital warts and cervical cancer live on and are shed from skin around the genitals. It doesn't latch onto or shed from hands.

There are strains of HPV that live on hands and feet (but don't live on genitals!!!). These are totally different, and they cause hand and plantar warts. Though closely related to genital HPV, they are NOT the same thing.

Anyway, you can't get genital warts from shaking hands. But if you do hold hands with someone with hand warts, you could get hand warts.

HPV is very contagious when the virus is replication or shedding virus particles. This is usually when warts are present and when cervical lesions are diagnosed...but we all know that HPV can be transmitted with no visual signs and no cervical abnormal cells.

You can transfer HPV from hand to genital contact.

From: Understanding cell changes National Cancer Institute

Almost all HPV that affects the cervix is spread by sex (through intimate genital to genital contact including vaginal or anal intercourse, finger to genital contact, and finger to anal contact).

There are over 100 HPV types about 30 affect the genital area. HPV is pretty much site specific...meaning the HPV types that cause hand or feet warts are not found in the genital area.

HPV sheds viral piratical and these virus particles finds entry in our skin tissue via a small cut, scratch, the friction that occurs during sex and sex play provides micro-abrasions allowing the virus to enter our skin tissue.... the virus can live in our tissue without causing an overgrowth or tissue or causing an overgrowth of tissue seen as a visual wart or as a lesion of the cervix, anal canal, vulva or penis.

Positive 8 years high risk HPV of the vaginal cuff and the vulva…you have a chance to learn lots about the virus in this time.

No you can't. It isn't skin to skin either, it is transmitted through body fluids. Generally when any body fluids are exchanged though it requires skin to skin contact hence the myth. Hand holding is safe as far as HPV goes.
