Sugar. Most people have Chai and Chai confused.
Chai is just the word for Tea in most of Asia. China, India, Middle East ...
But different people drink it different. Most drink it Black. The Iranians drink it black and put a couple of sugar cubes in there mouth and suck them while drinking Tea for Sweetness. That's why many of the pretty Iranian Ladies have Bad Teeth.
So chai is just tea boiled with some ground spice(little a small piece of Cinnamon, 1 cardamom split open if you want to feel relaxed, half or 1 a clove if you want to feel stumilated and increase your heart rate) some sugar add it to Boiling Milk, after 3 minutes add a Bag of Black tea or Orange Pekoe. And for this low cost concoction Star Ducks charges Mega Bucks. Shame on them. A cup of Joe or tea should only cost 99c or less. I am tried of paying for the ambience.
This Chai as we know it in the West is drunk seldom, for special occasions maybe. Its too rich to drink everyday.
Anyways so its sugar that makes Chai Sweet. You can use Honey instead if you like.
Cheers

Chai is the Hindi word for tea. Plain chai or tea is not sweet. In India, Chini ( which is sugar ) is added to chai. They also add spices and milk - which becomes sweet and fragrant milk chai. In south east asia, they add sweetened condensed milk to chai, but no spices. So you get sweet tea. Here chai is called teh, tii, tea, tha, tay.

It depends on what type of chai it originates from. In south east asia, the tea is usually sweetened with condensed milk.
In india it is sugar.
The spiced tea u drink in indian restaurants are usually seeped in spices with sugar and milk added .
Hope that helps.
Syrup is seldom used to sweeten chai in Asia

Sugar. Chai doesn't have to be sweet. Our favorite Indian restaurant serves a version with spices but no sweetener that is marvelous. (I don't like sweet tea of any kind.)

Chini. It's an Indian spice that is something similiar to sugar.
Or for the more traditional ones, it's jaggery. It's ghoor; sweetener made from juice crushed out of sugar cane stalks, sold as hard or semi-soft pieces of unrefined cane sugar, color varies from light golden to dark brwon, flavor similar to molasses.
Hope it helps!
