It seems these days that many places are requiring public places to be non smoking even if the owner of the building wants it to be a smoking establishment.
So you really shouldnt have a hard time finding a place to go for food or now even a bar for drinks where there is no smoke.
If you are really that worried about second hand smoke then just dont go to places where there is smoking allowed and you can breathe as deep as you want to with out any worries, and you can let the smokers puff away without annoying them with your worries.

Walk away. You're the non-smoker being imposed upon by rude and thoughtless smokers. Why should you have to stand there worrying how to breathe to minimize damage when the real answer is that you have an inalienable right to breathe normally without imposition from someone else. Stand up for your rights and don't feel you need to get sick in order to be polite to someone who really isn't polite at all.

Breath through your nose and take shallow breaths. The nose air is filtered somewhat by mucus and shallow breaths limit the intrusion of the contaminants into your lungs.

Breath through your sleeve if you can. It helps to filter out some of the smoke in the immediate area.

try having a wet tissue in your pocket whenever you're going out, place it in between the folds of your hanky and breathe in air with it on your nose it filters almost 90% of pollutions that your nose cannot handle, at least you wouldn't compromise yourself of breathing normally as you should! :)

I don't think it makes much difference whatever you do. If you can excuse yourself from that place, it will be best. If not, put a nose mask or cover your nose with a hanky so some tar will be stopped from going inside.
