There really is no difference. They are both caused by the herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus 1 is typically cold sores, but it can cause genital herpes (my genital herpes is caused by HSV1). Sores caused by HSV1 tend to be less painful and they tend to go away sooner then sores caused by HSV2.
Herpes simplex virus 2 is typically genital herpes, but it can also cause cold sores.
BOTH kinds are caused by the herpes simplex virus and both kinds are spread the exact same way - sex (vaginal, oral and anal) and by DIRECT skin to skin contact with sores.

One strain has an affinity for the nerves of the genitals (Type 2) & one for the nerves of the mouth (Type 1). Both may be spread to either the genitals or mouth.
