I have been a vegetarian for 2 years and I could never go back to eating meat. I became a vegetarian because I love animals and when I found out what they go through I immediately stopped eating meat. I was 10 1/2 at the time and I still love being a vegetarian. I am healthier and I can live free of guilt knowing that I don't contribute to animal cruelty.

I eat meat sometimes, and I think I could go a year, but I really really like sausage and scrapple and my dad is a butcher and he is ALWAYS cooking meat. I don't eat home very much though because I work 2 jobs. However, I do agree with most points that vegetarians make about why they don't eat meat. I think factory farming is horrible and you know what I'm talking about! However, I also think that as human beings, we were made to be omnivours. You can tell simply by our teeth and it has been human nature throughout history to eat meat. However, I really don't think that we should eat meat ALL the damn time like many Americans do. Cattle ranching uses a lot of land that could be better used to feed more people with veggies. Also, too much meat isn't good for you... all that satuarted fat and cholesterol. But once in a while, I think it's ok.
Edit: I read Fast Food Nation too and that's why I started buying organic and free-range food. Scared the bejesus outta me!!!! Also, I haven't eaten fast food in over 2 years!!!

Lots of good aswers and I have some comments. The girl that talks about the vaeriety of food veggie lifestyle opens you to is right. Some "vegetarians" do not know how to be vegetarians and probably don;t know how to eat healthy no matter what. I am a vegetarian by birth but started eating meat during college, I return to it a couple years ago. I always knew about the aweful animal treatment and the ecological impact but pretty much ignored it because I had no discipline. Now, when people ask me why I am vegetarian I tell them that there are 3 reasons: health advantages ecological reasons and ethical reasons. Yes, we were born omnivores but we must realize that our environment has changed since then and that today we have a variety of vegetables/fruits/legumes/grains/nuts available to us all year long. We are now able to live more healthy, help nature and fight the meat industry just by not eating meat. I say healthy because a vegetarian has space in its meals to eat more vegetables/legumes/grains/nuts than meateaters and obtains complete protein in addition to more nutrients and minerals than meat eaters. My hair, my skin, my figure has improved since I went back to being vegetarian. Try it for a year!

I've been vegan for about 20 years since I first learned what is involved in Animal Agriculture and how horribly we treat animals. I've had fewer illnesses, more energy and better health as a result. I am interested when I hear stories like the first girl to respond to you, because usually when you delve deeper, people who got sick when they were vegetarian tried to live off only apples, or some silly thing like that. They didn't eat a balanced diet with a wide variety of foods. Since becoming vegan an entire new world of food opened up for me. I've tried Ethiopian food, Lebanese, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Korean, Indian, Vietnamese and the list goes on and on. I didn't grow up eating mangoes, but I do now. I'm more adventurous that I was before and more interested in other cultures and the food of other cultures.

Yes, I am a vegetarian. The route that brought me here looks like this:
I read Eric Schlosser's book "Fast Food Nation" around Christmas time about 5 years ago. As I read the first half of the book, I swore off fast food - seeing how the quality of the food and the preparation standards are something you wouldn't feed to the Tazmanian Devil. As I got further into the book, he started talking about the farms where the cattle and chickens are raised. He also talked about the slaughterhouse. All bets were off for me at that point. No way in Hades was I going to continue to support and industry that knowingly treats animals horribly and also knowingly puts the health of American citizens at risk just to make a dollar.
It was a life-changing and eye-opening experience. I'm SO glad I read that book!

Im not vegetarian, but i do try to avoid eating meat as far as possible. I think, given the number of meat substitutes available, I would be able to 'go veggie' for a full year

i've been a vegetarian for about 3 months now and its because my ex-boyfriends whole family were vegetarians except for him ...and everytime i went over his house for dinner i thought the food was delicious and i resected what they did. so one night i looked up some stuff about vegetarianism on the web and found out about how its a solution to over population, world hunger, and animal torture. for example, feeding animals food just so we can eat them later on is stupid becuase we could just use that food to feed ourselves and world hunger would go down. also we breed these animals...in nature they wouldnt reproduce as much . therefore there would be a lot more space. so anyways i decided to try it and i loved it. then me and my boyfriend brokeup but i kept it up anyways.

Yes, I am. I went vegetarian because I no longer wanted to hurt animals, and I saw what happens to them.

I became a vegetarian about 8yrs ago and after 5mths went back to eating meat as I became very ill as I did not like meat substitute products or soy products. I lost soooo much weight and became very weak due to lack of iron. Now much of my protein is sourced from chicken or fish. No i don't think I would do it again for a year. The main reason I changed to veggie was at the time had little money for food so meat was out of the question.
