The number underneath is your diastolic blood pressure and represents the pressure of the blood on your arteries when your heart is at rest (in between beats) It is probably high due to buildup in your arteries. To lower your blood pressure youve got to eat healthy (there is a plan called the DASH eating plan for people with high blood pressure that you can probably find info on online), exercise and stop smoking. Stopping smoking is a must. Smoking causes your blood vessels to constrict which makes your blood pressure higher. I dont know if you smoke or not, but if you do quit. However, if your doc prescribed blood pressure meds, I would recommend taking them until you get your blood pressure under control. High blood pressure can cause damage to your internal organs and puts you at a higher risk for heart attack and stroke.

To lower your blood pressure, first, you have to modify your diet. Avoid foods that are high in salt, fat and cholesterol. Try to read labels whenever you do your shopping. By doing this, you will know if a certain food is high in salt and fat. Second, if you are smoking, try to quit. Smoking can lead to vasoconstriction of your blood vessels which then lead to high blood pressure. Thirdly, exercise. If you are over your ideal weight, try to lose weight by eating wisely and exercise. Don't crash diet, this usually have an undesired effect. Fourth, continue the antihyperensive that your doctor has prescribed. Lastly, see your doctor regularly to monitor your condition as well as monitor your blood pressure.
