Hello,
I'm not a vegeterian/vegan and as I post this I don't mean to say that all of you speak for PETA and agree with PETA...

But for those who are PETA supporters, can someone please explain to me why is it ok for PETA to encourage the sterilizing of home pets like dogs and cats when any other time they are crying, "don't harm the animals!"? I don't understand the logic.

People say that it is to prevent the overpopulation of these animals or to prevent future deaths becuase of the overpopulation... but that's crap to me because PETA is for "animal rights", and they should just accept the fact that domestic pets have babies, that's part of an animal's life.

To me this is hypocrtical.

So why do they encourage this and is it ok?

Besides over population, here are a few reasons why it is good for the animal(including rabbits):

* Spaying and neutering helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives.

* Spaying and neutering can eliminate or reduce the incidence of a number of health problems that can be very difficult or expensive to treat.

* Spaying eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the incidence of breast cancer, particularly when your pet is spayed before her first estrous cycle.

* Neutering eliminates testicular cancer and decreases the incidence of prostate disease.

You dont have to be a member or supporter of PETA to know that spaying and neutering pets is the best thing to do. It's the people that refuse to do so that are responsible for shelters being full and thousands and thousands of dogs and cats euthanized every day. There are not enough homes for all these animals as it is so to let your pet reproduce is irresponsible and just adding to the problem even more.

Sterilizing is not harming the animals, it's saving future unwanted animals from being born.

People will always have pets. PETA knows this. The ONLY way to stop the cycle is to educate people..they obviously failed with you.

I am for animal rights but I am also very pro spay and neuter. Don't call that crap..call it common sense.

I do hope you realize how ridiculous you sound.

It is hypocritical - just like Vegetarians who wear leather. Their heart, however, is the in the right place. There is a grevious pet overpopulation problem and the responsible thing to do it to spay and neuter your pets to preserve the quality of life for all pets in the future.

I'm sure the die hard PETA person would say that while they prefer that NO ONE had or kept pets or ate meat, that the reality of the situation is that will never happen. So, if they can't do anything about it the least they can do is encourage people to spay their dogs and cats and be generally responsible pet owners.

Many of PETAs arguments, as with anyone who tries to take the moral high road because of their diet predilections, devolve into hypocracy at some level or another.

because the temporary pain of the surgery is the better alternative to having to euthanize so many more animals that may be brought into the humane society when there is unplanned breeding. Both of my pets were found abandoned where if i had not found them they likely would have starved to death. This also is a result of a domestic animal that should have been "fixed". I am a very strong supporter of spaying and neutering domestic animals, the benefits outweigh the negatives. temporary pain is the better alternative to suffering and death to unwanted animals.

Sterilizing animals is NOT harming animals. It's the responsible thing to do to combat the high pet overpopulation due to LACK of sterilization. Having to euthanize thousands of unwanted dogs and cats every year is harmful and unfair to animals.

look at the animal shelters/humane society-dog pounds they are over run with pets. pets people got and didnt realize how hard they would be to take care of. or people having cats/dogs and they have babies and then they just run lose and animal control have to catch them. and eventually most of these pets get put down.(put to sleep) so why keep letting these animals have babies? they should do the same with some people. who keep on poppin em out and not wanting to care for them.

Um, WHAT?? Spaying or neutering animals is not cruel. People take birth control, use condoms, get their tubes tied or get a vasectomy and that's not cruel treatment is it? Sure the animal doesn't get to chose, but animals have no reasoning skills, which is why it is up to their owners to reason for them. It is protecting unwanted animals that roam the streets and get abused and run over. There is no reason not to spay or neuter your animal unless you think you want to take care of the litter they might have.
