Youd have better odds of getting hit by lightning and a car simultaneously while shaking his hand.

Just by shaking hands I don't think you're going to get syphilis. I've read that in some cases, it's possible to get it just by kissing.
You might get scabies just by shaking hands which will keep you scratching to figure out whether you've got it or not.
But, it's a bit phobic to shake someone's hand and believe you're going to come down with some serious disease.

Very unlikely. There would need to be an open chancre, and you'd have to rub it in really hard. Yes, there are cases of syph lesions on hands, but it's *rare*. So stop worrying.
And always be up to date with STD screens. If you're sexually active, you should be geting full screens every 6 months anyway.
ADDENDUM FOR BEAUTIFUL BUNNY: Actually, syphilis is spread by bodily contact, not fluids. The chancres are releasing spirochetes, which then burrow into skin on other people if they come into friction contact with the chancre. Condoms are generally effective IF they cover the chancre. but if the chancre is not covered, it is infectious.
