I am engaged to a man who has had herpes for several years. We have been together for almost 3 years and I've never caught it. We use condoms for sex, and when he gets an outbreak we do not have sex at all (this is only about a week or slightly longer before it goes away). We both went to the doctor's office and he explained to us both what we should do to keep me safe and so far so good. I love this man, so herpes is the last thing I'm concerned about. We take huge precautions for my safety.

Herpes usually is only contracted if the person has an outbreak and you have sex with them...others are carriers...however herpes can also be spread even without an outbreak..Its possible you may have contracted it and just havent had an outbreak, usually it takes within 10 days for a person to have an outbreak after sexual relations other times it could take up to a year. I would just be safe from now on if you dont want it and wear condoms.....and make sure if he does have an outbreak to not have sexual relations of any kind with him unless you want to contract the disease

Actually 30% of all sexually active Americans have it. You might have it and not know. The doctors can't test for it very well unless you are actually having an outbreak but a lot of people are just asymptomatic carriers.

I have been married to my husband for 4 years, and I have it. He still has not contacted it. Just be safe. Use protection. And obviously do not have sex when an active lesion. If you really want to be safe, get him to be on valtrex or suppresive therapy. The risk goes down for it being transmitted. GL!

Sorry to hear that, but yes, it can work out if you both want it to. See my response to your other question.
