It is well known that the consumption of alcohol can affect the rate at which the heart beats--usually, but not always, acting to increase the rate. Less is known about alcohol's role in the occurrence of arrhythmias, or irregular heartbeats. Preliminary studies suggest that alcohol can both support and inhibit certain arrhythmias.

The consumption of alcohol--in the context of social drinking or of serious alcohol abuse--has been found to be associated with changes in heartbeat. Not only does alcohol have a direct effect on the heartbeat, but complications of alcoholism, such as injury to heart muscle, neurohumoral disturbances (relating to the nervous system and/or to its hormones), and depletion of various electrolytes (charged atoms or molecules), may cause cardiac arrhythmias. The association of paroxysmal, or sudden, cardiac arrhythmias with alcohol abuse, generally without other evidence of heart disease, has been given the catch phrase "holiday heart."

Sudden, unexpected deaths have been found to occur in alcoholics. Although the overall nature of why these events occur has not been determined, deaths of this kind are generally known to be caused by a cardiac arrhythmia. This article reviews these issues.

Alcohol is a depressant so it slows both the heart rate (pulse) and the rate at which you breathe. Alcohol will also slow down the time that it takes for nerve endings in the brain to fire and respond to each other.
