They can be caused from not cleansing the areas properly and they can also be triggered by taking antibiotics. I believe all symptoms are different, but most common ones are itching, a discharge, and an unpleasant odor. Some people may also experience redness, swelling and pain. If you're not sure - I would recommend going to a physician. If you do think this is what you have, they sell 1-7 day treatments over the counter. Best of luck!!

A vaginal "yeast infection" is an overgrowth of a naturally occurring microorganism that lives in various parts of the human body. It's also called candidasis, after the name of the microorganism, Candida albicans. The most common symptoms are itching and burning in the vaginal and vulvar area (it may burn quite a bit when you urinate and it touches the raw skin), a thick white or yellowish discharge that has been described as "cottage cheese-like", and an unpleasant, yeasty or beery smell (if you have a yellow, greenish, or greyish discharge and a fishy smell, that is most likely bacterial vaginosis, and you should see your doctor right now).

Yeast infections are quite common, and 50% of women will experience at least one in her lifetime. Some women find that they get them fairly predictably when they take antibiotics (which can kill some of the bacterial vaginal flora and allow a takeover by C. albicans), or if they wear clothing with tight crotches. Candida flourishes in damp environments that don't get much air. It can also take hold and overgrow if there is initial irritation in the area, such as an allergic reaction to a detergent or lubricant. Generally, if you are otherwise healthy, you won't get them very often and they will be easy to treat with OTC creams or suppositories. However, since you don't know if you have one and cannot yet recognize the symptoms on your own, you should go to the doctor for diagnosis. He or she may tell you to just buy and OTC treatment, or may prescribe one for you, such as Diflucan, an oral antifungal.

There are a lot of natural remedies, but I can't vouch for how effective they are. Eating yogurt with live cultures can help keep your level of beneficial bacteria up and help stave off yeast infections. Cutting down on sugar and simple carb intake while treating candidasis can help, but eating them in general shouldn't trigger them. You can also use (plain!) yogurt with live cultures as a topical treatment, whihc seems to be effective, if slower than antifungals.

Candidasis also shows up in many other parts of the body, most commonly the mouth and throat ("thrush"), and in the folds of skin around the belly and groin in babies, or between the fingers. It can also be transmitted sexually, though it's not considered an STD. Penile candidasis is usually less noticible, however, and so a heterosexual pair can pass the infection back and forth unless they both get treated. (With a lesbian couple it would be more obvious if it had been passed.)

the human body naturally creates yeast, but sometimes when things are unclean or moisture gets trapped (such as when a woman's on her period or has been swimming a lot), an access of yeast grows. Symptoms include a whitish yellowish discharge that can look almost like cottage cheese and has a fishy smell to it. It also can cause itching and burning and can lead to a bacterial infection if it isn't treated. Over the counter products tend to clear up most yeast infections.

Hello, I'm on the second week and seeing definite improvement on my yeast infection symptoms:

Note that: If the yeast infection doesn't respond to over the counter treatment, prescription medication will likely be necessary. Similarly, if the symptoms return after two months of being treated, you should contact the doctor for professional treatment rather than resorting again to home treatment.

If this is the first time you have experienced a yeast infection, you should schedule an appointment to have the condition treated by a doctor instead of resorting to home treatment

Why did I get a yeast infection?
Many things can change the acidity of the vagina and boost your chances of a vaginal yeast infection. These include:

stress
lack of sleep
sickness
poor diet, or extreme intake of sugary foods
pregnancy
having your period
taking birth control pills
taking antibiotics
taking steroid medicines
diseases such as poorly-controlled diabetes and HIV infection
Can I get a yeast infection from having sex?
Yes, but it is rare. Women usually do not get yeast infections from sex. Instead, a weakened immune system is the most common cause of yeast infections.

being on antibiotics is the main cause because they kill off the good bacteria as well as the bad.

symptoms tend to be itching and a change to the skin or discharges.

get some yoghurt into you and go buy some canesten from the chemist - that always works.

oh and make sure you wear cotton underwear for a little while at least!

tight pants and or underwear. frequent wearing of non cotton underwear. more sweat down there than usual. pregnancy can cause them also hiv. Its when you get more bacteria than normal and your immune system isnt fighting it off like usual. That is why is is common in those with diseases or when they are pregnant.
