always a good idea.. if you take into account all the std's out there...when you are older and more capable of making informed decisions, you tend to make less errors... in this case... an error could be the end of your life...that's my opinion.

45 and in favor of abstinence until marriage. That is a big shift in my attitude from when I was younger. It has a lot to do with being a parent and with a stronger focus on religious values. Also, there is a lot of bad stuff out there - in my day, the STD's weren't as life-threatening as what's out there now. It's scary and abstinence is the only way to be sure.

I think abstinence is a great idea. It keeps you free from disease and unwanted pregnancy, and it can help you avoid heartache.

However, I'm 26/F and in practice, it just doesn't work for me. Abstinence stopped working for me a few years ago (when I was already an ADULT), and I decided it was no longer a good choice for me.

I decided to stop abstaining when I realized the only reason I was abstaining was because I said I would. I hate to go back on my word. But after a while, I was only abstaining to spite myself.

A lot of people favor abstinence because it builds self-esteem and shows strength and control. But in the end, abstaining made me dislike myself, and I no longer felt good about being chaste. I don't even belong to a faith that promotes chastity, so it's not like I even had God on my side.

At the time, I was 19 and in a stable long-term relationship. I knew plenty about contraception. And I had enough education to support myself should anything go wrong. I had my safety net. So I went for it, made sure to take responsibility for my actions, and overall it was a good experience.

Don't get me wrong, I think a lot of people need to abstain. A lot of people rush into sex at times in their lives where sex would NOT provide a positive experience. They end up emotional hurt, physically injured/infected, or they have a kid they can't support. For these people, I wish they would consider abstinence as a viable option. People need to realize they can control their sexuality and do things on their terms.

Maybe later on in my life, abstinence might be a good choice for me. In that case, I'd welcome it back into my life. I'm dating someone now. But when I'm single again, I look forward to focusing on myself, and not thinking about sex and all the baggage that can come with it.

I'm 21 and have been in a monogamous relationship with my boyfriend for 5 years. I know we are young (he's 24) and we have sex, but i am on double protection (use the pill and condom) and if we don't have a condom with us- we don't have sex. Plain and simple. I think it is good to have sex now at my age. I know of plenty of couples who waited and had huge sex issues on their wedding night because they didn't know how/what to do. I don't believe in abstinence, but i do believe you should be safe like i am. It's only natural.

I am a 28 yr female, and I don't believe in abstinence. I don't think you should go whoring yourself either, but being in a good intimate relationship is better that not having sex before marriage and then realizing you have a lousy sex partner for when you do get married. That will cause lots of frustration.

I'm 26 and female and I think abstinence is not normal. You're going against nature. I admit, I don't get it that often (only 4 times in the past year), but that is because I am picky and have pretty high standards. However, sex is fun and it's natural. Why fight it??? I just believe in having safe sex. ALWAYS safety first!!!

I lost my virginity at 21. I've never had an abortion, pregnancy or a STD of any kind.

If you wait till you're old enough to understand the consequences of sex, then you won't get into trouble.
