Have any diabetics out there tried some different birth control pills or depo, and how did they affect you? Yaz seemed to really mess up my blood sugars, Femcon is a bit better. Any other experiences you can share?

I agree that a non-hormonal IUD may be the best choice for diabetics in general. Condoms and other barrier methods can be used together as well.

Many hormonal birth control pills/patches/inserts, etc. can cause insulin resistance, higher blood sugars, weight gain (Depo) and an increased risk for heart attack and stroke. Not good for someone with diabetes! If you are otherwise young, healthy, don't smoke, have normal blood pressure and good control of your blood sugars, a hormonal method may be fine for you. There are also low dose pills. However, I still think IUD's are a very overall safe and effective choice.

No method of birth control is 100% risk free, however. You will need to ask your doctor which method is best for you, your health, and your lifestyle.

I use the Ovcon- now Femcon. Haven't had many issues with it messing up my blood sugars. I've also have been on Othronovin 7-7-7 and Ortho Tricyclen with similar results. My blood sugars are always a little wacky the week of my period though.

I've provided a link to a study on the American Diabetes Society's web site that recommends that diabetics not use oral birth control. I would think that the best solution is the use of a plain IUD with no drugs in it. Best of luck to you.
